  • Patent number: 9103208
Abstract: A cutting bit includes an elongate body having a shank portion and a head portion with an axial forward end. The head portion defines a pocket at the axial forward end thereof. The pocket includes a bottom surface and a sidewall extending from the bottom surface, wherein the sidewall of the pocket includes a plurality of projections extending outwardly from the sidewall. The cutting bit also includes a hard cutting tip attachably received in the pocket of the head portion. The plurality of projections are structured and arranged to position the hard cutting tip in the pocket and facilitate formation of a braze joint between the hard cutting tip and the pocket of the head portion.

  • Patent number: 7458646
Abstract: A rotatable cutting tool carried in a bore of a holder wherein the holder has a forward surface surrounding a forward end of the bore. The rotatable cutting tool includes an elongate cutting tool body that has a central longitudinal axis, an axial forward end and an axial rearward end. The cutting tool body contains a socket in the axial forward end thereof whereby the socket receives a hard insert therein. The cutting tool body has an enlarged diameter collar mediate of the axial forward end and the axial rearward end. The mediate collar presents an axial forward facing surface and an axial rearward facing surface. The cutting tool body has an axial forward hardness region beginning at and extending a first pre-selected distance in an axial rearward direction from the axial forward end to encompass the axial forward facing surface of the collar. The axial forward hardness region has a hardness equal to or greater than a first hardness, as well as a first average hardness.

  • Patent number: 4981328
Abstract: A rotatable cutting tool having a tool body with a socket contained in the forward end thereof wherein a hard insert is affixed to the tool body within the socket. The hard insert comprises an integral tip portion and an integral cylindrical flange portion joined to the tip portion by integral mediate portion. An integral boss projects from the bottom surface of the flange portion wherein the boss is of a generally frusto-conical shape which corresponds to the generally frusto-conical volume defined by the socket. A plurality of bumps projects from the bottom surface of the flange portion and the frusto-conical surface of the boss to provide for a braze joint of uniform thickness between the hard insert and the tool body.
