  • Patent number: 5931271
Abstract: A hybrid drive has an internal combustion engine and a motor/generator (M/G) for supplying and absorbing driving forces either alone or in combination. Two one-way devices are assembled between the engine and the M/G. One of these one-way devices permits the M/G to drive the engine at start-up and is released centrifugally at or above engine idle speed. The other one-way device permits the M/G to overrun the engine if the engine is at idle speed during dynamic braking. This permits all the dynamic braking energy of the M/G to be used in a regenerative fashion when battery charging is necessary.

  • Patent number: 5895335
Abstract: A continuously variable transmission (CVT) of the variable belt (CVU) type provides a variable drive range. A simple planetary gearset disposed between a power source and the CVU provides a forward direct ratio and a reverse underdrive ratio. The CVT is controlled at a lower overall ratio determined by the diameter of the input sheave being controlled during the forward drive condition at a dimension M. During the reverse drive condition, the diameter of the input sheave is maintained at a larger diameter (M*R) where R is the reverse underdrive ratio of the planetary.

  • Patent number: 5879263
Abstract: A five speed power transmission has a planetary gear arrangement comprised of three simple planetary gearsets and a plurality of clutches and brakes. The planetary gear arrangement is controlled to establish five forward gear ratios and a reverse gear ratio between the input and output shaft. One of the planetary gearsets is controlled to establish a reaction point or node for the fifth forward gear ratio.

  • Patent number: 5803858
Abstract: A power transmission has an engine driven torque converter and a selectively engageable direct clutch. The output from the torque converter is connected through a one-way clutch to a planetary gearing input, the output of which is connected to a transmission output. The selectively engageable direct clutch connects the input of a continuously variable transmission with the engine in bypassing relationship with the torque converter. The continuously variable transmission output is connected with the transmission output in parallel relationship with the planetary gearing. Engagement of the direct clutch transfers the engine input from the planetary gearing to the continuously variable transmission.

  • Patent number: 5803859
Abstract: A torque converter and a planetary gear arrangement are positioned in serial power flow relation between an engine and a final drive. A continuously variable unit (CVU) is positioned for serial power flow between a torque converter clutch and the final drive. The power path of the CVU includes a direct clutch which, when engaged, connects the CVU with the output member of the planetary gear arrangement. The power flow path of the planetary gear arrangement includes a one-way clutch which permits overrunning of the planetary input member when the direct clutch is engaged.

  • Patent number: 5720216
Abstract: A power transmission has a high pressure fluid feed for supplying fluid pressure to the control chamber of a movable sheave. The high pressure fluid is supplied through a tube supported for relative rotation in a pair of spaced bushings. One bushing has radial passages for communicating the high pressure fluid from the tube to the chamber and axial passages on the outer periphery circumferentially spaced from the radial passages. The other bushing has uninterrupted inner and outer sealing surfaces. The space between the bushings receives leakage fluid escaping passed the outer surface of the tube and the inner surface of one bushing. This leakage fluid is redirected, at least partially, by the axial passages to a lubrication passage in the transmission.
