  • Patent number: 7813694
Abstract: A secondary satellite radio or broadcast channel is used to broadcast advertisement clips (e.g., audio clips) to a receiver for subsequent decoding and playback. The receiver is configured for different tiers of service, e.g., one that delivers substantially advertising-free content and another that delivers content that includes more significant amounts of advertising. The content delivered to both is the same content; however, for the service tier that includes more advertising, the advertisements broadcast on the secondary channel are interleaved into the content, preferably in such a way that the continuity of the content being delivered is not compromised.

  • Patent number: 7542757
Abstract: A content channel is periodically or permanently allocated for use as an “update channel” or “firmware-image download” channel. Any firmware images downloaded to receivers in the system are thoroughly tested prior to being distributed among the receivers. Header information is included in the firmware image when it is transmitted to the receivers, and the firmware image is not accepted for use by the receivers until it is verified on the receiver side. Further, rather than overwriting the existing firmware, the new validated firmware updates are stored separately on the receivers and are utilized when the receiver is rebooted during power-up or by the host controller. If, during this reboot process, an error occurs in the new firmware image, the receiver is configured to revert back to the original firmware image so that it will remain operational, albeit without the updated firmware features.

  • Patent number: 6016166
Abstract: Synchronization among digital video and digital audio signals is maintained in a multimedia player with limited or highly varying processing power. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, a processor with stored program memory controls the decoding and playback of audio blocks and video frames, each stream independently stored in an order of intended playback time. The processor gives priority to the decoding and playback of audio blocks, and periodically determines whether a backlog of encoded video frames exists. Under video backlog conditions, the processor reduces the backlog by decoding only those backlogged video frames that must be decoded in order to decode and play the frame in the sequence of backlogged video frames with the latest intended playback time. After decoding this latest backlogged frame, the processor directs it to be played. Normal video decoding and playback then resumes for video frames following this latest backlogged video frame in sequence and in intended playback time.

  • Patent number: 5953533
Abstract: A computer software installation, distribution and maintenance method that manufactures one or more software products on an end user's target computer system. The method operates by generating a set of blueprints and raw materials for one or more software products to be distributed; provides the blueprints and raw materials to an end user; and manufactures the software products on the target computer according to the blueprints and using the raw materials. The method optionally provides for the testing of the target computer to determine its suitability for operating the software products, determines whether and updates to the software products are available and obtains them prior to manufacture; and tests and/or demonstrates the software products after manufacture.

  • Patent number: 5528625
Abstract: The present invention is a quantization-level-sampling (QLS) modem which includes means for separately equalizing each loop of an end-to-end digital telephone system network connection by employing a plurality of transmitter filters and a plurality of receiver filters in such a way that, in the direction of transmission from modem to central office, the voltage samples seen by the coder/decoder stations are equivalent to the network quantization levels transmitted by the modem, and in the direction of transmission from central office to modem, the voltage samples seen by the modem are equivalent to the network quantization levels encoded by the coder/decoder stations. The invention also includes a QLS modem communications system which includes the aforesaid digital telephone system network and a plurality of QLS modems. In preferred embodiments, an adaptation service unit within the telephone system network assists in the determination of the settings of the transmitter and receiver filters.
