  • Patent number: 4713436
Abstract: Glycoside-containing polyester products having improved color characteristics are provided by a polyester preparation process in which a polyol reactant containing at least a minor proportion of a glycoside reactant is reacted with a lower alkyl ester of a polybasic acid. The color characteristics of such products are notably improved relative to that which is obtained when said reaction is instead conducted using the corresponding polybasic acid or anhydride in place of the indicated lower alkyl ester thereof. The color improvement benefits of the present invention are particularly pronounced and dramatic when the polybasic acid component of the desired polyester product comprises an aromatic polybasic acid and when a lower alkyl ester of said aromatic polybasic acid is employed in the reaction in place of the aromatic acid itself.

  • Patent number: 3951892
Abstract: The invention provides a high-solids, low-viscosity, aqueous vehicle particularly adapted for use in coating cellulosic substrates under ambient conditions. The vehicle comprises a water-soluble oil with minute styrene polymer particles uniformly dispersed therein. The water-soluble oil portion comprises the reaction product of a dibasic acid or dibasic anhydride and a drying oil which is neutralized with a nitrogen base. The aqueous vehicle is especially useful in high solids, ink formulations having a high pigment to binder ratio.

  • Patent number: 3950290
Abstract: This invention provides a high-solids, low-viscosity, aqueous vehicle particularly adapted for use in coating cellulosic substrates under ambient conditions. The vehicle comprises a water-soluble oil with minute styrene polymer particles uniformly dispersed therein. The water-soluble oil portion comprises the reaction product of a dibasic acid or a dibasic anhydride and a drying oil which is then reacted to provide the water-soluble salt thereof with a nitrogen base. The aqueous vehicle is especially useful in high solids inks and overprint varnishes.

  • Patent number: H603
Abstract: A method of providing an adhesive resin and methods of providing glue mixes useful in plywood manufacture are provided. Also provided is a method of manufacturing plywood. An alkyl glycoside, e.g. methyl glucoside, is utilized in various ways in the manufacture of an adhesive resin, a glue mix and/or, a plywood panel to contribute various properties thereto. The plywood panel is useful as a structural material in a variety of settings.

  • Patent number: H643
Abstract: An improved process is provided for the manufacture of polyester or alkyd resin materials via the reaction of a polybasic acid or anhydride component with a polyol component containing at least a minor proportion of an alkyl, alkenyl or aryl glycoside or polyglycoside material. In the improved process, the reaction temperature is maintained below about 185.degree. C. until the reaction has reached at least about 50 percent of completion. In an especially preferred embodiment, the polyester or alkyd resin to be produced is an aromatic polybasic acid or anhydride-based, glycoside-containing material and the improved process of the invention further comprises substituting an aliphatic polybasic acid or anhydride material for a minor proportion of the aromatic polybasic acid or anhydride component thereof. The improved process of the present invention provides alkyl, alkenyl or aryl glycoside-containing polyester or alkyd resins having substantially better color (i.e.
