  • Patent number: 5407701
Abstract: A method of preparing a ply of composite material by applying an adhesive to a textile material comprising greige cords, so as to achieve an acceptable bond between the cords an elastomeric matrix, while not significantly altering the properties of the cords, is provided. The textile material comprises warp cords and weft cords; the weft cords are used to convey the warp cords through a heat setting oven without applying substantial tension to the warp cords, so as to not change their stress-strain properties. In the illustrated embodiment, the warp cords comprise aramid having a linear density of 500 to 3600 Denier and a twist multiplier of 5 to 8. The cords can be used in a crown reinforcing spirally wound overlay structure of a tire.

  • Patent number: 4893665
Abstract: A reinforcing cable (40) comprises at least two yarns (41,42,43) each of which consists only of aramid filaments, and a single core yarn (44) which consists only of filaments selected from the group consisting of polyamides having a structure which is at least partially oriented and polyesters having a structure which is at least partially oriented. The aramid yarns (41,42,43) are adjacent to one another and twisted about the core yarn (44) to manufacture a cable (40), but the aramid yarns are not twisted about one another. Articles of manufacture, such as tires, which contain the new cables are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4877073
Abstract: A nonmetallic cable (20) having utility in an overlay ply (39) of a tire (10) comprises two yarns (21,22). One of the yarns (21,22) has a yarn twist of either zero or is twisted in a first direction. The other yarn (21,22) has a yarn twist that is not zero, but is twisted in a direction opposite to the direction of yarn twist in the first yarn (21,22). The cable (20) has a cable twist that is opposite in direction to the twist of the yarn (21,22) having the larger of the two yarn twists. The cable has an elongation of 4% when it is subjected to a force of not greater than 12 Newtons. A tire (10) having a belt structure (30) has an overlay (39) comprising said cables disposed radially outwardly of at least one of the belt plies (31-35).

  • Patent number: 4343343
Abstract: An elastomeric article and a composite cord for reinforcing an elastomeric article. The cord comprises a core spirally wrapped by at least one high tenacity, substantially inextensible yarn. The core is composed of at least one unoriented polymeric filament which has an initial modulus of elasticity of at least 1000 newtons/mm.sup.2 and an elastic limit of at least one kilogram. The core has a length at break which is greater than the length of the yarn when the yarn is fully stretched out to permit stretching out of the yarn without rupture of the core for expansion of an elastomeric article and reinforcement thereof in the expanded condition.

  • Patent number: 4335771
Abstract: A tire with a reinforcing belt structure comprising three plies. The inner and outer plies each have a main body portion and a single folded end portion. The main body portions of the inner and outer plies have substantially the same width. The cords of the inner and outer plies have the same orientation with respect to the mid-circumferential centerplane of the tire. The folded end portion of each of the inner and outer plies is disposed radially outwardly of its respective main body portion. The inner and outer plies are arranged in such a way that the unfolded lateral end portion of the main body ply of the radially outer ply is enclosed by the bight of the radially inner ply. A middle unfolded ply is interposed between the main body portion of the inner and outer plies and comprises cords which are oriented with respect to the mid-circumferential centerplane of the tire in the direction opposite to the cords of the adjacent folded plies.

  • Patent number: 4198806
Abstract: A traveller useful for either Z- or S-twisting in an otherwise conventional twisting or spinning frame. The traveller is provided with a roller which has a cylindrical surface mounted for rotation about an axis which, when in operation, lies in a plane normal to the path of the traveller and which plane contains the axis of the associated spool. The axis of the roller cylindrical surface intersects the rotation axis of the spool at an angle of from 30 to 60 degrees and preferably between 45 and 60 degrees. The traveller, therefore, is independent of rotation direction. Specific length to diameter ratios are disclosed as are relations of roller diameter to thickness of threads and the like engaging the roller during operation.
