  • Patent number: 4636541
Abstract: Novel water-compatible compositions are those of at least one vinyl ester resin whose backbone is linear or substantially linear and consists essentially of at least one terminal olefinically unsaturated group and at least one terminal pyridinium group covalently bonded through the pyridinium nitrogen atom. These novel compositions are useful adhesive and coating compositions which find particular utility in cathodic electrodeposition. The compositions are prepared, for example, by reacting a linear or substantially linear epoxy resin with an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and then with a pyridine compound in the presence of sufficient amount of a Bronsted acid and water to stabilize the pyridinium salt thus formed.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4579887
Abstract: Non-aqueous dispersions are disclosed which contain (A) a relatively high molecular weight epoxy resin, (B) a non-aqueous dispersion medium, and (C) a dispersant such as a copolymer of (1) at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a group reactive with an epoxy group and (2) at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer free of any groups reactive with an epoxy group. These dispersions are useful in coatings, electrical or structural laminates or composites, body solders, adhesives, caulking compounds, casting compounds, filament winding and the like.

  • Patent number: 4419495
Abstract: The gloss of epoxy resin powder coatings is reduced by employing as the curing agent therefor or as a portion of the curing agent therefor, a polymer of two or more polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers, at least one of which contains a group which is reactive with a vicinal epoxy group.

  • Patent number: 4340713
Abstract: High molecular weight epoxy resins containing hydrolyzed epoxy groups are prepared by reacting (A) a low molecular weight epoxy resin and (B) a hydroxyl-containing compound in the presence of (C) water (D) a hydrolysis catalyst and (E) a catalyst for effecting the reaction between (A) and (B).

  • Patent number: 4200705
Abstract: A curable vinyl ester composition is prepared by the process wherein an organic hydroxy compound is reacted with a stoichiometric excess of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and, after substantial completion of that esterification, reacting an oxirane compound with the unesterified carboxyl groups.

  • Patent number: 3933935
Abstract: Thermosettable vinyl ester resins which provide improved flexibility and abrasion resistance are prepared by reacting a polyepoxide with a dicarboxylic acid half ester of a monomer having the formula ##EQU1## where R is H or methyl, R.sub.1 is a two to four carbon alkylene group, R.sub.2 is H, methyl or ethyl and n has an average value of 3 to 6.
