  • Patent number: 10744021
Abstract: The solution to protecting the human knee from external forces is to surround the knee with a brace that includes adjustable air bladders to absorb external forces before the external forces pass into the knee and cause internal knee injury. Such a brace includes a pair of struts that are bifurcated by hinges, the adjustable air bladders placed between the knee and the hinges.

  • Patent number: 9265646
Abstract: A double upright knee brace for treating knee flexion contracture includes upper and lower sections, each section having a pair of leg members and an anteriorly disposed integral thigh and shin cuff. A pair of hinges is intermediately positioned to the upper and lower sections. Notches formed in the upper and lower sections provide a catch for a pair of elastic bands, one each deployed on opposed sides of the knee brace, which provide a gait swing assist mechanism for the brace. A multitude of adjustable straps are deployed on both the anterior and posterior sides of the brace. A pair of air bladders, one deployed posteriorly below the knee and one deployed anteriorly above the knee, provide posterior-anterior mobilization when a patient wears the brace, stands up and ambulates. A pair of inner air bladders mounted on inner surfaces of the hinges stabilizes the knee joint.

  • Patent number: 9089403
Abstract: A disclosed knee orthosis has two vertical struts positioned on opposed sides of a knee joint in a generally parallel relationship. Each vertical strut has a hinge member located at a general middle portion; each vertical strut has a top and bottom end portion. An upper thigh cuff attaches at opposed ends to the upper end portions of the two vertical struts whereas a lower shin cuff attaches at opposed ends to the lower end portions. The lower shin cuff has a pair of hinges located proximal to the shin cuff opposed ends for permitting the shin cuff to pivot downwardly away from a shin of a person wearing the knee orthosis. An alternate embodiment employs hinges located proximal to the thigh cuff opposed ends for permitting the thigh cuff to pivot upwardly away from a thigh of a person when the same motion is performed.

  • Patent number: 8945035
Abstract: A knee brace including a swing assist system for the storage and return of energy is disclosed. The knee brace optionally includes bladders for the application of pressure to the knee joint and/or shin of a patient. An optional swing assist mechanism is present at the hinge(s) of the brace, aiding in the extension of the patient's leg and, therefore, correcting the patient's gait.

  • Patent number: 8388564
Abstract: A knee brace for treating hyperextension in a patient's knee. The knee brace includes two lateral uprights and a back support positioned horizontally to and generally at a middle portion of the lateral uprights. The lateral uprights and the back support define an integral frame. A plurality of straps includes a thigh, shin and patella strap connected at opposed ends to the frame for securing the brace to the patient. A plurality of cushion pads is disposed along inner surfaces of the lateral uprights and the thigh and shin straps for providing comfort and for mitigating brace migration. An inflatable air bladder is located on an inner surface of the back support for positioning behind the knee. The air bladder has an inflation tube for increasing or decreasing the air volume within the air bladder to affect a range of motion for the patient's knee.

  • Patent number: 8308671
Abstract: A knee orthosis device provides medial, lateral, and rotational control of a knee joint. The novel knee orthosis device stabilizes an injured or surgically repaired, or a weakened knee joint having a neurological disability, which causes instability therein, by applying adjustable corrective and therapeutic forces, which operate to stabilize and protect the knee as well as to correct abnormal gait and to rehabilitate the knee joint and surrounding muscles above and below the knee by encouraging and recruiting said muscles to operate again more normally through the use of a dynamic swing assist mechanism. The knee orthosis also provides dynamically conformable thigh and shin cuff circumferential band systems in combination with a multitude of other elements that conform to the constant dimensional changes of the muscle groups that are surrounded by the knee orthosis device during ambulatory or athletic motion.

Abstract: A polycentric hinge is positioned on one side of the patient's knee and a unicentric hinge is positioned on a second side of the knee. A lower portion of the polycentric and unicentric hinge is attached to a knee cuff about a lower leg of the patient. An upper arm of the polycentric and unicentric hinge is attached to a thigh cuff, the upper arm of the unicentric hinge being longer than the upper arm of the polycentric hinge. The upper arm of the unicentric hinge has a 15° to 20° set back angle when the patient's leg is straight. The polycentric hinge has a slotted central plate with star gears engaging a back portion and multiple movable blocks mounted in screw holes on a front edge of the slotted plate supporting an elastic band having a fulcrum point on the polycentric hinge at a lower and upper end.
