  • Patent number: 6167978
Abstract: A powerplant includes an engine (22) that may be disposed on a vehicle chassis 12 including a cab (14) or may be a stationary engine such as a generator set, and has a fuel delivery system (54) through which combustible fuel is introduced into the engine for combustion to power the engine. A tank (42) is disposed on the chassis below the cab at one side of the chassis. A bulkhead (70) divides the tank into a fuel supply reservoir (50) for holding a supply of fuel for the engine and a second supply reservoir (52), the latter reservoir holding a supply of fluid other than engine fuel. A first supply conduit (56) supplies fuel from the fuel supply reservoir to the engine fuel delivery system, and a second supply conduit (66) supplies fluid from the second supply reservoir to a portion of the powertrain. A return conduit (68) returns fluid from the powertrain to the is second supply reservoir and includes a walled passage (72) passing through the fuel supply reservoir.

  • Patent number: 5988134
Abstract: An oil pickup tube assembly for an internal combustion engine comprises a two-piece structure including a base member which attaches to an oil intake or inlet of an engine and includes an elbow therein permitting angling the inlet end of the pickup member into the appropriate position within a sump area of the oil pan. The pickup member comprises a U-shaped tube, one end of which engages the base member and another end of which depends into the sump area, with the inlet end being supported by a bracket attached to the crankcase. The interface between the tube and the base member includes an O-ring seal, with the tube and base member being releasably locked together by relative rotation therebetween and a tab and slot engagement formed between the pieces to permit a certain amount of stress-free misalignment between the base member and the pickup member.

  • Patent number: 5970928
Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes a spaced apart surge tank, the surge tank being an integral component of a pressurized liquid engine cooling system. A first conduit fluidly couples the surge tank to a component of the pressurized liquid engine cooling system. The conduit has an internal fluid passageway defined therein. The conduit is heat responsive, an application of heat to the conduit acting to effect a contraction of the fluid passageway. Further, a method of controlling fluid flow in a conduit connecting the surge tank to a component of a pressurized liquid engine cooling system, comprises the steps of:forming the conduit of a heat responsive material;flowing a fluid through the conduit;running the engine to an elevated fluid temperature; andcontracting the conduit fluid passageway responsive to the heating of the conduit caused by the fluid flow therein.

  • Patent number: 5794476
Abstract: A flexible gear support for a PTO gear box for an internal combustion engine is a relatively inexpensive unitary structure comprising two concentrically spaced rings which are engaged together by a flexible web extending therebetween. The gear support replaces very expensive ball bearings of precise tolerance which support a main input gear of the PTO unit during assembly and testing thereof. Further, a ring shipping spacer may be used with the gear support, if desired, to accommodate any shock loads during shipping and handling should the particular gear support be of a spring rate insufficient to accommodate such shocks.

  • Patent number: 5601060
Abstract: A cast oil pan, which is reversible for front and rear sump applications, including an integral suction passage which extends the length of the pan and has outlets at either end, the suction passage including a screened intake seated in the sump area of the pan. Preferably, the bottom surface of the sump area is depressed to create a drain passage beneath the suction passage, the drain passage and bottom surface of the suction passage thereabove having aligned drain ports which are accommodated by a single plug to provide for complete drainage of the pan.
