  • Publication number: 20160000243
Abstract: Thermoformed fluid material container closures, such as reclosable dome-shaped beverage lids, having an inner “plug fit” securement groove for removably securing the fluid material container closure to an upper rim of a beverage cup and which have a drip rate of about 1 g or less per 20 seconds. These closures such as beverage lids are made by a thermoforming process from a thermoformable web (e.g., sheet) to provide a generally dome-shaped upper fluid material-dispensing portion from polypropylene polymers having a flexural modulus of at least about 230,000 kpsi and in which a fluid-dispensing orifice in formed in the fluid material-dispensing portion which is substantially aligned with the machine direction (MD) of the thermoformable web.

  • Patent number: 7678444
Abstract: The present invention provides articles comprising a thermoformable composite comprising: a core comprising a renewable polymer having: (a) a Ts value of up to about 90° C.; and (b) a heat distortion index of up to about 90° C.; and a heat-resistant outer layer substantially surrounding the core and comprising a heat-resistant polymer having: (a) a Ts of greater than about 60° C.; and (b) a heat distortion index of greater than about 50° C.; wherein the renewable polymer comprises at least about 60% by weight of the composite, and wherein the heat-resistant polymer has a Ts value and heat distortion index greater than that of the renewable polymer. The present invention also provides methods for coextruding the heat-resistant polymer outer layer and renewable polymer core to provide a thermoformable composite.

  • Patent number: 7568591
Abstract: A lid is provided for use as a cover on a beverage container or other dispensing device, wherein the lid includes a dispensing spout therein for dispensing of the container contents therefrom. A flexible connector arm extends around at least a portion of the periphery of the lid and includes a fixed end fixedly attached to the lid at a first arcuate position thereof and a free end frangibly connected to the lid by a frangible tab located at a second arcuate position of the lid. The free end of the connector arm can be detached from the lid by tearing along a tear line provided in the connector arm spaced radially outwardly from the frangible tab. In this manner, detaching of connector arm from the lid occurs by a discrete tear line propagated through the connector arm, rather than through the lid flange, thereby allowing for detachment of the connector arm from the lid without compromising the integrity of the seal between the lid and the cup.

  • Patent number: 7275653
Abstract: A reclosable lid for use with an open-top container is disclosed. The reclosable container lid comprises a cover including an annular top wall having a channel integrally formed therein. A drinking spout in the top wall is adapted to dispense the contents of the container. The reclosable lid uses a slide lock closure feature that prevents spillage during transportation of the open-top container and easy access for opening and drinking. The slide lock closure is configured to engage with the channel to slide longitudinally along the channel between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the slide lock closure opens the drinking spout and in the second position, the slide lock closure closes the drinking spout to inhibit dispensing the contents of the container.

  • Patent number: 6579390
Abstract: A patch, method of applying a patch, and an applicator device for application of the patch to cover the opening of a hole in a gable-top carton panel. The patch is made from a frangible laminate material and is welded to the underside of the carton panel, corresponding to the side in contact with the beverage contained therein. The welder is located outside the container and the patch is applied to the carton after bottom seal formation.

  • Patent number: 5916080
Abstract: A container fixant applicator configured to complement target fixing zones of a container. Caulk is introduced into a container, over portions of the container intended to be fixed. The caulk is activated, flowing between the target surfaces. The caulk cures, fixing the container. The wafer substantially retains its configuration during the fixing of the container. The wafer is configured so that it may not pass through the pour spout of a gable top-type container. Methods for producing and applying the container fixant applicator are also provided.

  • Patent number: 5626285
Abstract: An otherwise conventual paperboard blank for forming a gable top carton is provided with a cutout at a bottom corner of the first sidewall forming panel of a five panel blank. The bottom portions of the blank are conventionally folded to form a carton bottom end closure. The sideseam panel is tapered at one end due to a previous skiving operation. After localized heating of certain panel surfaces and upon folding the blank to initially form a tube, with the sideseam forming panel overlying an edge portion of the first panel (conventional procedures), the cutout coincides with the removed portion of the sideseam panel which forms the tapered end, to thus prevent unwanted adhesion between the first panel and the second panel.

  • Patent number: 4449990
Abstract: A pair of beds (10, 12) are connected by a cross-over valve (20) cyclically with a source of air under pressure (22) and a source of vacuum (24). The beds are further interconnected by a pressure equalization flow path (40) and a pressure equalization valve (42) for selectively opening and closing the flow path. The beds are filled with a physical separation material which allows oxygen to pass more readily than other components of air. The separated oxygen is collected in a surge tank (30). A timing and control circuit (50) controls the cross-over valve such that it reverses positions twice per cycle. The timing and control circuit further controls the pressure equalization valve to open 1 percent of the cycle duration before the cross-over valve reverses positions and to close 2 percent of the cycle duration after the cross-over valve changes positions.
