  • Patent number: 8593289
Abstract: A system and method for the detection of severe weather conditions in which radio frequency (RF) signals are received by an AM radio operating in the 525 kHz AM frequency band and the signals are filtered to remove unwanted frequencies. The energy level of the signal is then measured and if the energy level of the signal is above a threshold value, an evaluation period for the signal is initiated. During the evaluation period, the percentage of time the energy level of the signal is above the threshold value is calculated. If the percentage of time that the energy level of the signal is between about 50% and 99%, then a severe thunderstorm warning may be generated. If the percentage of time that the energy level of the signal is above 99%, then a tornado warning may be generated.
