Publication number: 20040050675Abstract: A high life cycle MEMS device is provided by the invention. The inventors have recognized that the cantilever or cantilevers of an MEMS shunt switch are a failure point in need of improvement. In an aspect of the invention, at least a portion of the signals in the grounded state of an MEMS shunt switch are bypassed to ground on a path that avoids the cantilever(s) supporting the movable pad. In a preferred embodiment, ground posts are disposed to contact the movable pad in an actuated position and establish a signal path from a signal line to ground. The inventors have also recognized that a shape of cantilevers near their anchor point contributes to failures. In another preferred aspect of the invention, an anchoring portion of the cantilever or cantilevers is generally coplanar with the remaining portion of the cantilever(s). An additional post beneath the anchoring portion of the cantilever(s) permits cantilever(s) lacking any turns that form a weak structural point.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 17, 2002Publication date: March 18, 2004Applicant: The Board of Trustees of the University of IllinoisInventors: Milton Feng, Richard Chan

Publication number: 20040041832Abstract: A method and system for displaying information at a remote display device from an information processing system that lacks video display components causes the information processing system to initiate system memory to store video information despite the lack of video components, thus allowing applications to write display information to the system memory and allowing the information handling system to re-direct the display information to the remote display. For instance, the information handling system BIOS includes a video function module that detects a lack of video display components, determines that the information handling system is a headless server, and initiates system memory to store video information. A remote display module associated with the BIOS monitors the system memory and re-directs detected display information stored in the system memory to a remote information handling system that displays the information.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 28, 2002Publication date: March 4, 2004Inventors: Tuyet-Huong Thi Nguyen, Wai-Ming Richard Chan

Publication number: 20040008099Abstract: A high life cycle and low voltage MEMS device. In an aspect of the invention, separate support posts are disposed to prevent a suspended switch pad from touching the actuation pad while permitting the switch pad to ground a signal line. In another aspect of the invention, cantilevered support beams are made from a thicker material than the switching pad. Increased thickness material in the cantilever tends to keep the switch flat in its resting position. Features of preferred embodiments include dimples in the switch pad to facilitate contact with a signal line and serpentine cantilevers arranged symmetrically to support the switch pad.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 9, 2002Publication date: January 15, 2004Applicant: The Board of Trustees of the University of IllinoisInventors: Milton Feng, Nick Holonyak, David Becher, Shyh-Chiang Shen, Richard Chan

Patent number: 6560218Abstract: A method is disclosed for establishing a switched virtual circuit in a digital network having network nodes with static routing tables. The static routing tables contain at least primary and alternate routing data. When a node is unable to forward a call over its outgoing primary route due to congestion or physical failure and its alternate route is the same as the route on which a call setup request arrived, it clears the call at that node and sends a crankback message to the preceding node, which responds to the crankback message to attempt to dynamically re-route the call over the alternate route stored in the routing table of the preceding node. If the attempt is unsuccessful, it sends the message back to the next preceding node and so on.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2001Date of Patent: May 6, 2003Assignee: Alcatel Canada Inc.Inventors: Shawn McAllister, Nutan Behki, Richard Chan

Publication number: 20020099893Abstract: A method for handling system management interrupts in multiprocessors systems is provided. After the processors of the system enter system management mode, one of the processors of the system is designated to handle the system management interrupt. The processor designated to handle the system management interrupt scans a memory location that includes a memory space associated with the saved contents of the processor registers of each processor. After locating a SMI signature in one of the memory spaces associated with the respective processors of the system, the SMI handler of the processor designated to handle the system management interrupts, retrieves any necessary parameters for the system management interrupt from the memory space associated with the SMI signature, thereby allowing a processor to cause the issuance a SMI, to pass a set of parameters for the software SMI, and to permit a second processor to receive the parameters and handle the software SMI.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 24, 2001Publication date: July 25, 2002Inventors: Tuyet-Huong Thi Nguyen, George Mathew, Wai-Ming Richard Chan, Mukund P. Patent number: 6321287Abstract: A system for enabling remote console redirection on a computer system having a remote monitor connector circuit located on a different computer bus than a local monitor connector circuit. In one example, a remote monitor connector circuit located on a PCI computer bus generates system management interrupts (SMIs) via an interrupt controller to a system processor of a computer system such as a server. In response to a SMI, the system processor invokes an interrupt handler to determine the source of the interrupt. In response to determining that the SMI was generated by the remote monitor connector circuit, the system processor places the video data being provided to a local monitor connector circuit (such as a graphics accelerator conforming to the Accelerated Graphics Port interface standard) into a shared memory location accessible by both the system processor and the remote monitor connector circuit. The remote monitor connector circuit provides the video data to a remote monitor via e.g.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1998Date of Patent: November 20, 2001Assignee: Dell USA, L.P.Inventors: Anil V. Patent number: 5991158Abstract: A switch is disclosed for indicating that a computer card is installed in an expansion slot of a computer. A conductive strip attaches to an end wall of the slot and deforms when a computer card is installed. A conductive contact is provided in the wall of the slot to complete an electrical connection when the conductive strip is deformed. The strip connects electrically to a conductor that is passively driven high by a voltage source and pull-up resistor. The contact connects electrically to ground, so that when the computer card causes the strip to touch the contact, the voltage on conductor is driven low, providing an indication to associated circuitry that a card is present in the slot. A pair of switches may be used to provide repetitive signals indicating a card is present. If only one switch is closed, the computer may indicate to the user that a card has been installed improperly, or contaminants are present in the slot.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 1997Date of Patent: November 23, 1999Assignee: Dell USA, L.P.Inventors: Richard Chan, Stuart Hayes
