  • Patent number: 9513406
Abstract: Disclosed embodiments concern a soluble functionalized nanoparticle suitable for use with polymerizable components, such as monomers (or polymers thereof), used to make gradient optical polymer nanocomposites. In particular disclosed embodiments, the nanoparticle is functionalized with one or more surface ligands that promote the solubility and dispersion of the nanoparticle in the disclosed monomer. Also disclosed herein are embodiments of a method for making the functionalized nanoparticle as well as embodiments of a composition comprising the functionalized nanoparticles.
    Type: Grant

    Assignee: University of Oregon
    Inventors: Richard Chartoff, Casey Check
  • Publication number: 20150283552
Abstract: A method comprising: applying a magnetic nanoparticle/polymer suspension to at least a portion of a surface of plastic pieces, or to at least a portion of a surface of fiberboard pieces, in a mixed solid waste stream; and subjecting the magnetic nanoparticle/polymer suspension-coated plastic or fiberboard pieces to a magnetic field to separate the magnetic nanoparticle/polymer suspension-coated plastic or fiberboard pieces from the mixed solid waste stream.

  • Publication number: 20150023643
Abstract: Gradient index optical materials are formed by drop by drop dispensing of nanoparticle/monomer suspensions. Refractive index variations are defined by nanoparticle concentrations that can vary in three dimensions. Droplets of differing compositions can be mixed, and droplets or layers or droplets are partially cross-linked by exposure to ultraviolet radiation prior to dispensing additional droplets. Gradient index optical elements such as lenses, prisms, and waveguides can be formed in flexible polymer layers.
