  • Patent number: 11705250
Abstract: A magnetic shielding material includes a material comprising manganese bismuth (MnBi) and tungsten (W), where a ratio of MnBi:W is in a range of 50:50 to about 70:30. A radiation shielding product includes a part including manganese bismuth (MnBi) and tungsten (W), and a plurality of layers having a defined thickness in a z-direction, wherein each layer extends along an x-y plane perpendicular to the z-direction. At least some of the plurality of layers form a functional gradient in the z-direction and/or along the x-y plane, and the functional gradient is defined by a first layer comprising a ratio of MnBi:W being less than 100:0 and an nth layer above the first layer comprising a ratio of MnBi:W greater than 0:100.

  • Publication number: 20190080807
Abstract: An apparatus and method for shielding against radiation and providing thermal insulation is disclosed. The apparatus includes multiple layers including an inner layer, an outer layer, and a radiation shielding layer composed of materials such a tungsten sheet, multiple tungsten sheets, staggered rows of tungsten rods, and/or a polymer radiation shield composed of a polymer and radiation attenuating material. Insulation layers may also be incorporated into the apparatus. The method for protecting against radiation includes the steps of providing a radiation shielding apparatus and securing such apparatus to a radiation emitting structure.

  • Publication number: 20080041271
Abstract: An improved composite material, and method of manufacture thereof, comprising varying amounts tungsten powder, or metal/alloy powder of similar density, and clay or silicone is disclosed. The improved composite material may be useful as a replacement for lead and lead-based composites where similar densities are required but the use of lead is undesirable. The disclosed composite material permits a large variety of tungsten powder particle sizes to be utilized and results in improved ductility over known tungsten powder composites.

  • Patent number: 6275199
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for displaying image and facsimile data on a host-based application display. A host computer generates control and download command data for displaying the image or facsimile data. The image and facsimile data is processed by a non-programmable-terminal (NPT) or a programmable work station (PWS) for presentation of a display screen. When a user requests another function, the NPT or PWS stores image information and sends image information to the host computer. The save image information includes cache image counter data, scaling and viewed image screen location data that is used to restore the displayed image and facsimile data when the user returns to the previous function. Both the user and host application can specify a foreground color and a background color for the image and facsimile data display.

  • Patent number: 5922056
Abstract: A computer system automatically senses characteristics of diverse peripheral devices connected to a common communications port, and automatically maximizes the communications speed with the devices. Coupled in daisy chain fashion to the communications port, all peripheral devices receive every signal issued from the controller port, each device responding only to signals addressed to that device or signals addressed to a universal address. The controller first receives an identifier from peripheral devices attached to the controller port. The controller then interprets the received identifiers to determine a maximum communications speed for each device. Next, the controller and the attached peripheral devices are configured to communicate at the maximum communications speed of the slowest device. This guarantees that all messages sent by the controller are compatible with all peripheral devices.

  • Patent number: 5884198
Abstract: The components of a portable radio are distributed over a user's body to utilize the user's body as a vehicle for carrying the radio. A patch antenna mounted across a user's shoulder improves the user's ability to receive and transmit by minimizing body shielding effects. A control unit including a talk button, display, key pad and speaker is mountable to the user's other shoulder in close proximity to a user's ear and mouth for faster and more efficient communication. The power supply includes a plurality of battery packs that are mountable about the user's waist. The radio components are thus positioned to optimize their use while efficiently and comfortably utilizing the user's body to support the radio.

  • Patent number: 5444868
Abstract: The mobile radio system includes a plurality of power amplifier modules having discrete power levels, a common transceiver module and a plurality of control head modules having different control functions. Selected ones of the power amplifiers and control heads are electrically and mechanically coupled to opposite ends of the transceiver. In one form, the control head may be remotely mounted and electrically coupled to the selected power amplifier. A common bracket is used to mount a radio having selected ones of the power amplifiers coupled to the transceiver with a selected control head. In a further embodiment, a receptacle having electrical fittings at its rear end and an opening at its opposite end receives the radio through its open end with the electrical connections being automatically coupled to one another upon final seating of the radio in the receptacle. The radio includes a handle which forms a latch for releasably securing the radio in the receptacle.
