    Abstract: New anianic, water-soluble cellulose ether derivatives, in particular, carboxymethyl hydrophobically modified hydroxyethylcellulose (CMHMHEC), which are useful as thickeners in aqueous solutions, e.g., water-based protective coating compositions such as latex paints, as well as aqueous solutions, including water-based protective coating compositions containing these ternary cellulose ethers as thickeners and protective coloids, are disclosed. The cellulose ether derivatives are characterized in that they have a Brookfield LVF Viscosity of about 5 centipoise to about 60,000 centipoise in a 1 weight % solution.
