  • Patent number: 5829743
Abstract: A data-bearing card is transported past a reading, writing or other communication head by at least one drive element connected to an electric motor through a preselected gear train. The mechanism moves the card at speeds corresponding to a preferred range of rates at which data borne by the card is intended to pass the communication head, and does so with a minimum of "jitter". In one particular embodiment, the gear train includes a worm screw driving a worm wheel for rotation with the drive element. In another embodiment, the electric motor is supported on a base oriented substantially parallel to the card being transported, and a shaft carrying the drive element and a first gear of the gear train is supported for rotation by at least one side plate detachably mounted to the base.

  • Patent number: 5569898
Abstract: A card entry gate has a slot defining several ridges extending longitudinally from the upper and lower surfaces of the slot. A data-bearing card, with an encoded strip and embossed portions, fits between the ridges of the slot when inserted lengthwise in any orientation. The ridges are positioned to avoid the encoded strip and the embossed portions, thereby preventing damage to the card and reducing jitter. The ridges further resist the malicious or accidental insertion of certain coins, odd-shaped cards, and many foreign objects.

  • Patent number: 4677508
Abstract: A drive which permits endwise loading of the ANSI standard one-quarter inch tape cartridge in an enclosure having a width of approximately five and three-quarter inches. The drive has a mechanism for partially opening the tape access door of the cartridge upon insertion thereof so that the door pivots clear of a read/write head. Another mechanism is provided for thereafter operatively engaging and disengaging the read/write head with a length of tape in the cartridge.

  • Patent number: 4573091
Abstract: A drive for a tape cartridge having an access door along one side edge thereof. The drive includes a housing having a front panel and an elongate tray dimensioned to have the cartridge inserted endwise thereon. The tray is supported within the housing for longitudinal movement from a retracted position in which the tray is substantially contained within the housing to an extended position in which a portion of the tray extends through a slot in the front panel of the housing. A mechanism is provided for opening the access door of the cartridge while the cartridge is supported on the tray and the tray is being moved from its extended position to its retracted position. Another mechanism is provided for moving a read/write head and a capstan drive within the housing between operative engagement and disengagement with the cartridge after the cartridge has been inserted onto the tray and the tray has been moved to its retracted position.
