Patent number: 8816872Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for monitoring the productivity, operability, and safety conditions of factory machinery and particularly unitizers. The system monitors factory machines such as a unitizer in a corrugated box factory, using one or more sensors to determine whether and how efficiently the machinery is operating, to determine if any conditions of the machinery require immediate attention, and to determine if a safety violation has occurred with respect to the machinery. The system appropriately notifies a factory manager of issues that arise. In addition, the system aggregates data about past performance and safety violations and generates reports about the aggregated data to help factory managers maximize productivity of the monitored machinery. The disclosed system is particularly advantageous in that it enables improvement of the productivity of the factory as a whole.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2012Date of Patent: August 26, 2014Assignee: Signode Industrial Group LLCInventors: Richard G. Newman, Laura J. Morra, Arland L. Morrison

Patent number: 8175445Abstract: A non-contact cutter for a polymer corner protector disposed on a load includes an air manifold having an inlet and an outlet and defining an air passage and a heating element disposed at least in part in the air passage. A compressed gas is communicated to the manifold and into the air passage for intimate contact with the heating element to heat the gas. The heated gas is discharged through the outlet to contact and soften the polymer corner protector at a desired location to separate the corner protector at the desired location. A system and method for non-contact cutting are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2009Date of Patent: May 8, 2012Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Arland L. Morrison, Richard K. Patent number: 7421944Abstract: A strap joint rotating assembly is for use with a strapping machine. The strapping machine has a feed head for feeding the strapping material into the strapping machine, a strap chute through which the strapping material is passed and a sealing head to seal overlapping courses of the strapping material to one another to define a strap loop having a seal and defining a strap loop plane. The strap joint rotating assembly includes a driven wheel having an axis of rotation generally perpendicular to the strap loop plane and a pinch wheel that has an axis of rotation and is carried on a wheel block. The wheel block pivots to move the pinch wheel into and out of the strap loop plane. The pinch wheel, when in the strap loop plane, has its axis of rotation parallel to the axis of rotation of the driven wheel. The pinch wheel is further movable toward the driven wheel to pinch the strap between the driven wheel and the pinch wheel. The driven wheel is driven to rotate the strap loop around the load.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2008Date of Patent: September 9, 2008Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Russell M. Flaum, Darryl M. Devine, Roy J. Jensen, Wesley P. Nowakowski, Richard G. Newman

Patent number: 6789469Abstract: A bundling assembly for use with a strapping machine that is configured to position a strap material around a load and tension the strap material around the load includes first and second moving belts positioned at the strapping machine entrance in opposing relation to one another. The belts each have a paddle mounted thereto and define a pathway through the bundling assembly. A movable stop is positioned at the exit of the strapping machine and is movable between a stop position and a convey position. The moving belts rotate to contact the paddles with the load, urging the load into the entrance of the strapping machine and into an area under the chute. The belts stop rotation, thus stopping movement of the load upon contact of the load with the stop. The movable stop then moves to the convey position and the moving belts rotate such that the paddles move the load out of the exit of the strapping machine. A stabilizing assembly applies a slight pressure on the load during the strapping cycle.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2003Date of Patent: September 14, 2004Assignee: Illinois Tool Works, Inc.Inventors: Allison D. Patent number: 6540170Abstract: A multiple coil dispenser supports a pair of coils for dispensing a flexible material from one of the coils. The dispenser includes a frame and at least one coil support for supporting the coils for rotation. A fixed arm is mounted to the frame and includes a plurality of rollers positioned longitudinally therealong. A movable arm is pivotally mounted to the frame for movement toward and away from the fixed arm. The movable arm has a plurality of rollers positioned longitudinally therealong and is biased away from the fixed arm. A bifurcated chute directs the strapping material from one of the coils to the arms. A brake assembly is operably connected to the movable arm between an engaged position when the movable arm is moved away from the fixed arm and a disengaged position when the movable arm is moved toward the fixed arm. A space between the fixed arm and the movable arm defines an accumulation region that varies in size as the movable arm moves toward and away from the fixed arm.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2001Date of Patent: April 1, 2003Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Allison D. Tipton, Richard G. Newman

Patent number: 5980150Abstract: A quarter turn toilet seat pin including a bolt with an elongated bolt with a bolt head, an end portion and a body member. The body member has a linear key way extending upwardly from the end portion. The linear key way has a top end with a side-lock key way. The side-lock key way has a slot. Also, a sleeve is provided and engages the bolt. The sleeve has an interior channel sized for receiving the body member of the bolt. The sleeve has an axial opening that is in receipt of a threaded nipple. The threaded nipple projects from the opening and into the interior of the sleeve for engaging the linear key way as the bolt being slid into the sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1997Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Inventors: Richard G.
