Publication number: 20130117439Abstract: A method for discovering a communication device is disclosed. The method includes: receiving in the communication device a communication including a request for an address and an identification of an application, in response to receiving the communication, associating a dynamic address of the communication device with the identified application, and sending a second communication directly or indirectly to a client device, the second communication including the dynamic address. The communication device may further obtain a dynamic address in response to receiving the communication. The dynamic address may be used for a dedicated purpose, such as for receiving a file for subsequent use by the application.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 9, 2012Publication date: May 9, 2013Inventors: Brian Alexander OLIVER, Richard John GEORGE, Tu Dien DO, Scott Peter GAMMON, Kapil NAYAR

Patent number: 8423030Abstract: A method, system and computer-readable product for a fixed mobile convergence system. The method includes analyzing at least one rule set associated with at least one user profile with the user profile being associated with at least one mobile device supporting more than one line. Each line offering one or more transports and options for establishing a telephone call. After analyzing the one or more rule sets, a context-specific real-time usage mode is determined based on the analysis which include selections of a telephone line, a transport and establishment options. After determining the usage mode, a call is established between one of the devices and a telephony endpoint, either incoming or outgoing, based on the determined usage mode.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2010Date of Patent: April 16, 2013Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Richard John George, Zhigang Ruan, Brian Alexander Oliver

Publication number: 20130040638Abstract: To handle a communication session at a wireless mobile communications device, after receiving an indication of current signal strength of an access point for a wireless local area network (“WLAN”) a signal strength threshold associated with the access point is retrieved. If the communication session is currently carried by a cellular network and the current signal strength exceeds the signal strength threshold, the communication session is switched from the cellular network to the WLAN. A metric is then adjusted based on timing of the switch relative to any switch of the communication session from the WLAN to the cellular network over a preceding time window associated with the access point. Based on the metric, the signal strength threshold associated with the access point is selectively adjusted.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2012Publication date: February 14, 2013Inventors: Richard John George, Miranda Bing Ying Lim, Marian Constantin Buzdugan

Publication number: 20130012193Abstract: Aspects relate to initiating voice calls to mobile devices from an enterprise network. In one example, a server can initiate a voice channel to a mobile device, and if the mobile device cannot be reached, an access network may redirect the call from the server to a number identified as a voicemail number; however, such number is reconfigured to instead be directed to a number located within the enterprise network. The server can monitor or receive an indication that a call is incoming, and attributable to the mobile device. If such a call is incoming or received, then the server determines that the call has failed. If the mobile device answers the call, the server can determine that the voice channel has been established, without waiting for a confirmation indication, such as a DTMF tone.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2012Publication date: January 10, 2013Applicant: RESEARCH IN MOTION LIMITEDInventors: Richard John George, Yuriy Lobzakov, Colin Mark Werner

Patent number: 8326275Abstract: A method, apparatus and system for handling a call received at a mobile communication device, in association with an automated number identification (ANI) number are provided. The ANI number is compared with a list of ANI numbers associated with an applications server, the list stored at the mobile communications device. When the ANI number is not in the list, a tone is provided on the call. When a corresponding tone is detected on the call in response to the tone, the call is handled as a call associated with the applications server and otherwise the call handled as a typical mobile communication call.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2010Date of Patent: December 4, 2012Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Zhigang Ruan, Richard John George

Publication number: 20120179829Abstract: A system and method are provided that enable a registrar or other server or proxy device to be used to provide a path between a pair of endpoint devices for exchanging addressing information, in order to establish a direct P2P connection. Once that connection is established, the connection may be used for any P2P data communications, e.g. SIP establishment of a VoIP call, instant messaging, online gaming, file transfer, multimedia streaming, etc. In this way, each endpoint device possesses a list of candidate addresses to establish a direct P2P connection, which may then be used for any type of communication. By relying on a registrar or other server to enable the candidate lists to be exchanged, control can still be maintained if necessary, since the candidate lists can be modified, e.g. to enable a transparent interception, to impose or remove security restrictions, etc.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 6, 2012Publication date: July 12, 2012Applicant: RESEARCH IN MOTION LIMITEDInventor: Richard John George

Publication number: 20120077478Abstract: Availability of a call for a mobile device can be signaled over a data channel; to avoid unnecessary airtime charges, an audio channel for the voice call is setup only if a user of the mobile device accepting the call. Responsive to the user accepting the call, the mobile device can signal to a network to establish the audio channel. Establishing the audio channel takes some time. The time in which the audio channel is established is used to output, at the mobile device, supplemental information received over the data channel, such as information about a calling party, such as directory information, organization information, and call history. The outputting of such information during this time period makes a user experience better, because the user is less likely to think that a call has failed by observing an unfilled delay between when the call was accepted through the user interface and when the audio channel is actually available to service the call.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 29, 2010Publication date: March 29, 2012Applicant: RESEARCH IN MOTION LIMITEDInventors: Salvatore Ierullo, Bradford Lawrence Spencer, Richard John George
