Patent number: 5316207Abstract: A container formed by wrapping a slotted flexible sheet about rigid end panels having projections that extend through the slots. The projections include stacking projections which engage recesses in the end panels of adjacent stacked containers and support projections at the corners. The support projections engage each other when the containers are stacked to provide resistance to lateral loading. At least one end of the flexible sheet terminates in the top panel and engages a wedge-shaped projection on the end panels to lock that end of the sheet in place. The other end may be similarly locked in place or may overlap the first end and be held in place by a tab and slot arrangement. Alternatively, the other end portion of the sheet may include a lid which is held in place by mechanical tabs, while intermediate edges spaced from the end engage the wedge-shaped projections.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1993Date of Patent: May 31, 1994Assignee: Riverwood International CorporationInventors: John A. Patent number: 5307986Abstract: An article carrier which permits ice to be added to the carrier after removing the top to cool the contents. The carrier is formed from a paperboard blank having a waterproof interior surface. The end and side panels are connected by gusset panels, the end portions of which are adapted to be in nonadhered face-to-face relationship. When the top panel of the carrier is removed, these portions of the gusset panels are relaxed, allowing the side and end panels to pivot out about their foldable connection to the bottom panel for a limited distance to expand the interior of the carrier while maintaining the carrier in watertight condition.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1993Date of Patent: May 3, 1994Assignee: Riverwood International CorporationInventor: Richard L. Patent number: 5246113Abstract: A carrier containing a plurality of layers of articles, such as beverage cans, arranged in stacked end-to-end fashion. The carrier is fully enclosed and is formed with overlapping top panel flaps which produce an area of double thickness between handle openings in the flaps. A reinforcing sheet on the underside of the top panel in the double layer area protects against tearing, while stress relief lines in the form of score lines extending from the ends of the handle opening to the corners of the carrier provide for distribution of lifting and carrying stresses. A separator sheet preventing direct contact between stacked articles extends between layers and may include distortable areas aligned with the articles. Downward pressure on the upper layer causes the bottom of an article to force the distortable area into a recess in the top of the next lower article.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1992Date of Patent: September 21, 1993Assignee: Riverwood International CorporationInventor: Richard L. Patent number: 5234103Abstract: A basket-style carrier having a top panel for enclosing the carrier. The top panel comprises flaps foldably connected to the side panels which contain openings through which a top portion of articles packaged in the carrier extend. The flaps also include at least one fold line extending parallel to the side panels, allowing the flaps to be folded over so that their free ends extend to and contact the center partition of the carrier. This biases the top panel flap edges against the center partition and an edge of the opening against the underside of flanges or other transversely extending projections of the articles packaged in the carrier. The handle in a center partition may be designed as a three-ply reinforced handle.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1992Date of Patent: August 10, 1993Assignee: Riverwood International CorporationInventor: Richard L. Patent number: 5103971Abstract: A carrier for articles such as beverage cans of the type that grip the top portions of the cans so as to suspend them from the carrier. The upper ends of the cans extend through apertures in the bottom panel of the carrier, and the chimes or lips of the cans are engaged by locking tabs surrounding the aperture. Glue flaps foldably connected to the bottom panel adjacent the can apertures by connecting flap segments overlie the upper ends of the cans. The connecting flap segments contain support tabs which assist in supporting the cans, thereby providing support substantially throughout the circumference of the cans.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1991Date of Patent: April 14, 1992Assignee: Riverwood International CorporationInventor: Richard L. Patent number: 5022525Abstract: A wrap-around bottle carrier having bottle neck openings comprised of arcuate edges. The arcuate edges engage bottle necks of minimum circumference to hold then in place. Concentric arcuate fold lines located radially outwardly of the openings are connected to the arcuate edges by slits to form flaps which can fold up to permit bottle necks of greater circumference to be received and held in place by the openings. The openings may be located adjacent the side panels of the carrier, in which case slits extending from the arcuate edges of the openings may be located in the side panels.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1990Date of Patent: June 11, 1991Assignee: Manville Forest Products CorporationInventor: Richard L. Patent number: 5020668Abstract: An enclosed article carrier having upper sloping and panels to conform to the shape of the end articles in the carrier. The end panels are comprised of dust flaps adhered to overlapping upper and lower end flaps. Each dust flap is connected to the adjacent edge of its side panel along angled fold lines, the bottom edge of the dust flap being connected to the side panel adjacent the bottom panel of the carrier. Each dust flap has a cutout extending from its outer edge to a point spaced from the juncture of the fold lines. The carriers are thus strong enough to resist bowing during loading, resulting in well-aligned end panel flaps.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1989Date of Patent: June 4, 1991Assignee: Manville CorporationInventor: Richard L. Schuster
