  • Publication number: 20180083232
Abstract: An outer cover of a pouch-style battery includes a nanoceramic coating. Constructing an outer cover including a nanoceramic coating may include forming a malleable layer, applying a sealing layer to an inside surface of the malleable layer, and applying the nanoceramic layer to an outside surface of the malleable layer. Fabricating an outer cover including a nanoceramic coating may further include applying a protective film to an outside surface of the outer cover, which may be removed shortly before or after installation of a battery cell for which the outer cover is manufactured. Fabricating an outer cover including a nanoceramic coating may also include applying one or more adhesive layers, for example an adhesive layer between the malleable layer and the sealing layer. • Patent number: 9917335
Abstract: Methods and systems for detecting and compensating for expansion of rechargeable batteries over time. An expansion detector may be coupled to or positioned proximate a rechargeable battery to monitor for expansion thereof. After expansion exceeding a selected threshold is detected, the expansion detector may report the expansion to an associated processing unit. The processing unit may undertake to arrest further rechargeable battery expansion by modifying or changing one or more characteristics of charging and/or discharging circuitry coupled to the rechargeable battery. For example, the processing unit may charge the rechargeable battery at a lower rate or with reduced voltage after detecting expansion.

  • Patent number: 9912186
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system that manages use of a battery corresponding to a high-voltage lithium-polymer battery in a portable electronic device. During operation, the system monitors a cycle number of the battery during use of the battery with the portable electronic device, wherein the cycle number corresponds to a number of charge-discharge cycles of the battery. If the cycle number exceeds one or more cycle number thresholds, the system modifies a charging technique for the battery to manage swelling in the battery and use of the battery with the portable electronic device.

  • Patent number: 9899661
Abstract: A method for improving the lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) film (such as films in thin film batteries) morphology includes using oxygen (O2) and argon (Ar) gases during sputtering deposition of the LiCoO2 film. This may allow for the manufacturing of thicker LiCoO2 films. Such a method may also significantly reduce or eliminate cracking and obvious columnar structures within the resulting LiCoO2 film layer. Sputtering using a mixture of O2 and Ar also may produce a LiCoO2 film layer that requires lower annealing temperatures to reach good utilization and has higher lithium diffusion rates.

  • Patent number: 9698451
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system that manages use of a battery in a portable electronic device. During operation, the system uses a reference electrode in the battery to monitor an anode potential of an anode in the battery during charging of the battery in the portable electronic device. If the anode potential falls below an anode potential threshold, the system modifies a charging technique for the battery to extend a cycle life of the battery. For example, the system may reduce a charge current of the battery if the anode potential falls below the anode potential threshold to prevent degradation caused by a negative anode potential during charging of the battery.
