  • Patent number: 4083791
Abstract: Amides of C.sub.50-200 alkylphenoxy-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acids made by reacting a C.sub.50-200 alkylphenol with a halocarboxylic ester (e.g., butyl chloroacetate) followed by displacement of the ester group with an amide group have a much higher content of amide than a product made using a halocarboxylic acid reactant in place of the ester. The product is an effective lubricating oil dispersant.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 16, 1976
Date of Patent: April 11, 1978
Assignee: Edwin Cooper and Company Limited
Inventors: John Scotchford Elliott, Bryan Terence Davis, Richard Martin Howlett
  • Patent number: 4051049
Abstract: Bis-substituted phenols bridged through a carbon atom of an aliphatic carboxylic amide or ester are effective ashless dispersants for lubricating oil. Preferably, the phenols are substituted with a high molecular weight poly-alpha-olefin group.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 15, 1976
Date of Patent: September 27, 1977
Assignee: Edwin Cooper and Company Limited
Inventors: John Scotchford Elliott, Bryan Terence Davis, Richard Martin Howlett
  • Patent number: 4046802
Abstract: Alkylphenoxy alkanoic esters are made in high yield by reaction of a C.sub.50-200 alkylphenol with a halo-substituted alkanoic ester in the presence of a base. The reaction product contains little unreacted alkylphenol and is converted without separation to a reaction mixture containing mainly alkylphenoxy alkanoic amide by reaction with amines. The amide reaction mixture is an effective ashless dispersant for lubricating oil.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 26, 1976
Date of Patent: September 6, 1977
Assignee: Edwin Cooper and Company Limited
Inventors: John Scotchford Elliott, Bryan Terence Davis, Richard Martin Howlett
  • Patent number: 3966807
Abstract: Novel compounds which are amides of bis(phenol substituted)carboxylic acids, or derivatives thereof are described by specified general formula and as reaction products of at least one bis(phenol substituted)carboxylic acid, or derivative thereof, having at least one alkyl substituent of at least 30 carbon atoms on a phenol substituent, and at least one aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic primary or secondary di- or polyamine or a hydroxy alkyl amine. Also described are lubricating compositions containing the novel compounds of the invention.

Date of Patent: June 29, 1976
Assignee: Edwin Cooper & Company Limited
Inventors: John Scotchford Elliott, Bryan Terence Davis, Richard Martin Howlett
  • Patent number: 3954808
Abstract: Novel compounds, useful as intermediates in the preparation of lubricant additives, are described by specified general formulae and as condensation products of (i) an alkyl-substituted monohydric phenol, phenol sulphide or alkylene bis-phenol in which the alkyl substituent contains at least 8 carbon atoms and (ii) a carbonyl-substituted compound selected from the group consisting of glyoxylic acid, pyruvic acid, levulinic acid, 3-oxoglutaric acid, 2-oxoglutaric acid and esters of such acids.
