Patent number: 7114876Abstract: Pans for power finishing freshly placed concrete in which the acoustic impedance of the treating equipment is made substantially equal to the acoustic impedance of the concrete slab being treated. Preferably, a powered, twin rotor riding trowel is provided with a pair of circular finishing pans that are attached to the conventional rotor blades used later in the finishing process. The pans are characterized by an acoustic impedance approximating the acoustic impedance of plastic concrete, thereby optimizing the energy transferred to the concrete. Preferred pans comprise ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) plastic. During troweling, the pans are frictionally revolved over the plastic concrete for finishing the surface without prematurely sealing the uppermost slab surface. Through the disclosed troweling method, a highly stable concrete surface results, and delamination is minimized. Alternative troweling uses pans coated with layered impedance matching material.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2004Date of Patent: October 3, 2006Assignee: Allen Engineering CorporationInventors: J. Patent number: 6150752Abstract: A liquid-filled acoustic transducer for finishing an exposed surface of a work medium, such as plastic concrete, transmits acoustic energy generated within an enclosed liquid medium, through a transducer housing member, and into the exterior work medium. Acoustic waves are generated by electrically-actuated liquid-immersed piezoelectric elements housed within the device. The efficiency with which acoustic waves are transmitted from the interior of the device to the adjacent work medium is enhanced by providing an intermediate transducer housing member, disposed between the liquid in which the piezoelectric elements are immersed and the work medium, having acoustic impedances at its two major surfaces matching the respective acoustic impedances of the respective interfacing media and a continuous acoustic impedance gradient between those two surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1998Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Face International Corp.Inventor: Richard P. Patent number: 6013972Abstract: A vibrating mechanism comprised of piezoelectric elements which vibrate at a high frequency when a voltage is applied to them. The piezoelectric elements are mounted on a rib so that their free ends extend from the rib. When the piezoelectric elements are energized the free ends vibrate with a "wing-flapping" motion. Weights may be attached to the free ends of the piezoelectric element to increase the inertial component of vibration. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the piezoelectric elements are prestressed. The invention will be an inexpensive substitute for other vibratory devices.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1997Date of Patent: January 11, 2000Inventors: Samuel A Face, Jr., Glenn F. Rogers, Jr., Richard P. Bishop

Patent number: 6004499Abstract: Standing planar compression waves are used to control the spacing and alignment of previously randomly distributed and randomly oriented loose fibrous elements in a fluid medium. A relatively intense standing planar compression wave comprising the superposition of multiple planar compression waves travelling in opposite directions is established between a pair of emitter/reflector surfaces working in concert. The fibrous elements gravitate to the nodes of the standing waves and align themselves parallel to the emitter/reflector surface of the transducer. The composite material may be solidified by cooling (or other process), which freezes the fibrous elements in an aligned array, thereby effecting the directional dependency of various structural properties of the composite material (including compression strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity).Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1998Date of Patent: December 21, 1999Assignee: Face International CorporationInventors: Richard P Bishop, Bradbury R Face

Patent number: 5837298Abstract: A vibrating hand trowel for finishing plastic concrete. The vibratory mechanism includes piezoelectric elements which vibrate at a high frequency when a voltage is applied to them. The trowel as a whole includes a top piece including a cover plate and handle, and a bottom piece including the piezoelectric elements mounted on a rib and a flat bottom which contacts the concrete. The top and bottom piece are preferably attached by a series of screws. The vibrating trowel is pulled over the concrete creating a smooth, wet layer useful for lubrication of the area where the trowel and concrete are in contact. This layer develops because the vibrations cause water and air to rise to the top of the concrete. The invention will allow for easy finishing of plastic concrete because of its lightweight and simple design. The invention will also create a smooth finish of the hardened concrete.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1997Date of Patent: November 17, 1998Assignee: Face International Corp.Inventors: Samuel A. Patent number: 5834882Abstract: A multi-layer piezoelectric transformer device includes first and second electroactive members having electrodes bonded to each of their opposing major faces; and a bonding layer disposed therebetween. The first and second electroactive members are polarized in a thickness direction, between their two major faces, such that when energized by an electric field the first and second electroactive members longitudinally strain. The first and second electroactive members are arranged such that deformation of one electroactive member results in corresponding deformation of the other electroactive member. The device provides substantial transformation ratios in which relatively high power may be transferred in relation to the size of the unit, operability over wide input and output frequency bandwidths, and electrical isolation of the voltage and current at the input to the device from the voltage and current at the output of the device.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1997Date of Patent: November 10, 1998Assignee: Face International Corp.Inventor: Richard P. Patent number: 5831371Abstract: A piezoelectric snap-actuator includes a piezoelectric bender element with electrodes disposed on each major face, a spring member for causing the device to snap from a first neutral position to a second neutral position, a prestress layer for applying a compressive force to the piezoelectric bender element, and adhesive layers is provided. The piezoelectric bender element and the spring member are each bonded to the opposite faces of the prestress layer by an adhesive layer. The device assumes one of two neutral positions when not electrically energized. Due to the direction of poling of the piezoelectric bender element, when the piezoelectric bender element is electrically energized it strains in a longitudinal direction. This strain causes the device to deform. When the electrical energy is turned off, the device returns to one of the two neutral positions.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1997Date of Patent: November 3, 1998Assignee: Face International Corp.Inventor: Richard P Bishop

Patent number: 5814232Abstract: Vibrational energy is introduced into a portion of a liquid-solid work mixture at a natural resonant frequency of that portion of the mixture while that portion of the mixture is in a fluid or semi-fluid state. A vibrating apparatus imparts controlled vibrations either onto the surface or beneath the surface of the liquid-solid work mixture in sequential stages, the frequency of vibrations generally increasing with each subsequent stage, corresponding to an increase in the natural resonant frequency of the progressively-narrowing liquid portion at the top of the liquid-solid work mixture. A resonant frequency-indicative condition of the liquid portion of the work mixture adjacent the vibrator apparatus is sensed as the vibrator apparatus moves across the top surface of the liquid-solid mixture, and the output frequency of the vibrating apparatus is correspondingly adjusted in accordance with the sensed condition as the vibrator apparatus travels.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 1996Date of Patent: September 29, 1998Inventors: Samuel A.
