Patent number: 7017469Abstract: A metering device of the type in which a shuttle moves axially within a chamber between two terminal positions, with the chamber having fluid inlet and outlet at each end so that fluid may enter through one end to move the shuttle to cause fluid to be ejected through the other end, and vice versa. A control valve is provided to control the fluid flow, the control valve being a spool valve having a spool sealingly slidable within a bore, the spool valve being associated with a device to drive the spool between two alternate positions in response to the shuttle reaching each end of the chamber.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2003Date of Patent: March 28, 2006Inventor: Laurence Richard Penn

Patent number: 6886720Abstract: A metering device that includes a housing defining a cylindrical chamber containing a reciprocating shuttle. The two opposed end parts of the chamber are interconnected by fluid flow ducts to a cylindrical valve bore. Contained with the valve is a rotary valve rod driven rotationally by a stepping motor. The valve rod has part cut away to form channels or recesses. In one rotational position of the valve rod a flow path is established from an inlet to one end of the chamber and a separate flow path is established from the other end of the chamber to an outlet. In an alternate orientation of the valve rod a flow path is formed from the inlet to the other end of the chamber and the first end of the chamber is connected to an outlet.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2003Date of Patent: May 3, 2005Inventor: Laurence Richard Penn

Publication number: 20050012396Abstract: Information for configuring control apparatus for a power system including a plurality of controlled power supplies is produced using a graphical interface which displays the topology and sequencing of the power supplies in the power system. A database is used to select power supplies to add in determining the power system topology. Sequencing is represented by displacing icons representing the power supplies along lines representing their input and output voltages, and arrows representing startup sequence dependencies. A processor produces the configuration information, consistent with the displayed topology and sequencing, using information for the selected power supplies from the database, for downloading to the control apparatus.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 18, 2003Publication date: January 20, 2005Inventors: Avinash Chidambaram, Richard Penn, David Cooper

Publication number: 20040054511Abstract: A system and method of modelling interaction between a plurality of agents and an environment, comprising providing agents with simple characteristics and storing those characteristis, storing detailed information on the complete environment and allowing the agents to access environment information from the stored detailed information on a location by location basis and use the information to progress through the environment, such that a processor can monitor these movements to determine suitability of the environment by providing an underlying environment map which is highly detailed and which is accessible by the simple agents. A more efficient and user friendly system and method for evaluating environment layouts is provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 18, 2003Publication date: March 18, 2004Inventors: Patrick Alasdair Fionn Turner, Alan Richard Penn

Patent number: 6676387Abstract: A metering device contains a rotor which defines elongate chamber, there being a shuttle contained within the chamber movable between two terminal end positions. Frusto-conical surfaces defined on the rotor cooperate with annular members defining corresponding seats. One passage extends from one end of the chamber to one frusto-conical surface, and another passage extends from the other end of the chamber to the other frusto-conical surface. Each annual element defines a respective inlet and outlet for fluid and a shuttle is present within the chamber. As the rotor rotates, the shuttle effects a shuttling movement thus measuring dispensed volumes of fluid. A sensor is provided to detect physical contact of the shuttle with the end of the chamber to cause the rotor to advance.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2002Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Inventor: Laurence Richard Penn

Patent number: 6173893Abstract: A plurality of scan lines is used to detect characteristic features of a checkerboard structure or similar pattern structure of symbology within a field of view. The scan lines cross leading edges of the symbology which provides signals to a plurality of processors. The processors detect instances wherein sequential leading edges exhibit angular shifts corresponding to a pattern of the symbology. A further processor is used to detect when a coincidence of these angular shifts occur, thereby providing an indication of the location of the symbology within the field of view.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1997Date of Patent: January 16, 2001Assignee: Intermec CorporationInventors: Pavel Maltsev, Richard Penn
