  • Patent number: 5787417
Abstract: A method and system for selection of hierarchically related information. Initially, topics are displayed in the content variable list which encompass a first set of information. Upon receiving input from the user, new topics appropriate to the user input are displayed in the content variable list which encompass a second set of information hierarchically related to the first set of information. A selected topic is then obtained from the user from among the new topics displayed. Information is then obtained which is encompassed by the selected topic. In a preferred embodiment, this information is obtained by performing a database query using the selected topic as a query topic.

  • Patent number: 5602981
Abstract: A computer system having a visual display which displays a selectable button and permits a user to quickly redisplay a previous visual display selected by the user is dislosed. The selectable button preferably contains a textual or graphical representation upon the face of the button which indicates the previous visual display. When a new visual display is selected by the user, either by single clicking on the button or by a click-and-drag operation, the button is revised such that the previous visual display is selectable by the single clicking on the selectable button. The visual display of this invention allows the user to quickly and conveniently revert to a previous visual display by a single user operation utilizing a selectable button.

  • Patent number: 5371847
Abstract: A method and system for specifying the arrangement of windows on a display device [is provided]. [In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a] A selection grid is displayed on the display device. The selection grid has a bounding rectangle which represents the bounds of the display device and has a plurality of lines extending vertically and horizontally across the bounding rectangle. A user selects which line segments should be removed from the selection grid. A line segment is defined by the intersection points of the vertical and horizontal lines. As the user selects a line segment, the line segment is removed from the selection grid. The line segments that are not selected define the arrangement for the windows. The computer system then arranges the windows on the display in accordance with the specified window arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4974159
Abstract: An improved method and system for transferring control in a multitasking computer system is provided. In preferred embodiments for use with 80386 machines, the virtual machine monitor (VMM) writes a virtual machine break point (VMBP) instruction into the executable code of selected DOS routines to cause the DOS routines to transfer control to the VMM. By selecting systems calls of indefinite duration for the application of this method, system performance can be improved. In this preferred embodiment for 80386 machines, 8086 programs designed to run under DOS can be more efficiently executed in a multitasking environment.
