  • Patent number: 6388660
Abstract: An input pad that is integrated with a touch pad is disclosed. In one embodiment, a portable computer includes an input pad cover slidable from a first position approximately adjacent to the touch pad to a second position over the touch pad. In the first position the touch pad is operable as a pointing device; relative movement actuated on the pad causes a pointer on a screen of the computer to correspondingly move. In the second position the touch pad is operable as an input pad, preferably a numeric input pad; actuation of an absolute position within a given region on the pad registers the depression of a key corresponding to the region with the computer.

  • Patent number: 6320591
Abstract: A system and method for utilizing an electronic book is disclosed, comprising generating a first label capable of being utilized to indicate a relationship with a first element of an electronic book and generating a second label capable of being utilized to indicate a relationship with at least one of the first element and a second element of an electronic book. The first label and second label are capable of being utilized to access at least one of the first element from the first label and at least one of the first element and the second element from the second label. In an exemplary embodiment, a user may specify a label to correspond with an element of an electronic book. Additionally, labels may be utilized to access the element of the electronic book by the user. Labels may also be modified by size, shape, text, color, apparent texture, and the like. Furthermore, labels may be utilized to indicate a relationship with an element.

  • Publication number: 20010038381
Abstract: An illuminated pointing device for a computer is disclosed. The pointing device comprises a sensor, a communications link and a housing. The sensor translates movement by a user of the computer to a signal representing a desired corresponding change in the position of a pointer on a display of the computer. The communications link provides for the signal to be sent to the computer. The housing has one or more illuminated exterior surfaces to render the device visible in a low-light or no-light environment.

  • Patent number: 6243260
Abstract: Retractable speakers for use in a housing coupled to a computer, such as a portable computer or docking bar, which allow for sound quality optimization by being positionally adjustable relative to the computer housing. Retractable speaker locations relative to the computer housing include the top surface, side surfaces or front surface. Speakers are rotatable about a hinge relative to the housing surface, or emerge from the surface, such that the speaker is rotatable about an axis in order to direct the sound output toward a user. Alternatively, speakers disengage from the computer housing for placement on a surface in an optimum sound quality arrangement. Retracted speakers are substantially internal to the computer housing allowing for ease of transport and use in remote locations.

  • Patent number: 5801919
Abstract: A portable computer has a main body section, a display screen and an adjustable camera assembly. The camera assembly is carried by the portable computer and has a limited field of view and a discernable viewing direction. The camera assembly is moveable relative to the portable computer so that the viewing direction may be adjusted without moving the main body section or display screen.
