Abstract: Disclosed are methods for the formation of a rubber/filler/curative/plasticizer compacted masterbatch which may be performed in two ways. In one embodiment, a rubber and a filler are intimately mixed for a time and under shear conditions sufficient to form a free flowing associated composition, then the composition is mixed with a plasticizer and a curative to form the compacted masterbatch. Alternatively, the starting material may be an already-formed free flowing associated composition of rubber, filler and optional curative, which is mixed with a plasticizer and optional curative to form the compacted masterbatch.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for covering a roof with seamable sheet material for roofing prepared from a polymeric composition of matter comprising the steps of: applying layers of sheet material prepared from a seamable polymeric composition of matter to the roof being covered, overlapping adjacent edges of said layers, and adhering the overlapped areas to provide an acceptable seam strength; wherein the composition of matter comprises an interpolymer of ethylene, propylene, and at least two nonconjugated dienes, each having one reactive double bond.

Abstract: An acid of the formula A--COOH).sub.x, or an anhydride thereof, wherein x is an integer of 1 or 2, wherein the acid groups are vicinal if x is 2, and A is phenyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 alkylene, C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 alkenylene, C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 bridged or nonbridged cycloalkylene or cylcoalkenylene, with the proviso that A is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl if x is 1, renders ethylene-propylene-nonconjugated diene elastomers more adherent to fibers that have been treated with a resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex dip when said elastomers are cured directly onto said fibers.

Abstract: Rubber, e.g., butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer rubber, in readily friable or free flowing powdered form is prepared by halogenating (e.g., chlorinating) the rubber in particulate form in an aqueous medium. Sodium hypochlorite/acid or chlorine water may be used as the chlorinating agent. Preferred bound chlorine content of the treated rubber is at least 0.1%.
