    Abstract: A cathode-ray tube having a luminescent screen on a faceplate panel and a tension mask assembly, wherein the assembly comprises a pair of support blades for supporting a tension mask. The tension mask has a pair of mask borders each being fixed to a respective support blade and a plurality of strands extending between the mask borders. The mask further comprises cross wires extending generally perpendicular to the strands on a screen facing side and at least one shield assembly extending between and attached to the mask borders. The shield assembly has a sheath extending along one side of the mask in contact with at least one strand and a shield attached to the cross wires of the mask in overlapping relation to the sheath.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for terminating crosswires on a tension focus mask. The apparatus includes a set of base segment side rails each having a length and two respective ends. A pair of square tubes attached perpendicular to the respective ends of said base segment side rails to substantially form a rectangle. Also included are a pair of massive side rails having a length and two respective ends mounted above said base segments perpendicularly to said square tubes on each of the side rapid. Beam shield is offered to the massive side rail and insulating members are sandwiched between the side rail and a bus bar. Finally, a tension mask is attached and crosswires are laid and affixed to the bus bar.

    Abstract: A color cathode-ray tube has an evacuated envelope with an electron gun therein for generating an electron beam. The envelope further includes a faceplate panel having a luminescent screen with phosphor elements on an interior surface thereof. A focus mask, having a plurality of spaced-apart first conductive strands, is located adjacent to an effective picture area of the screen. The spacing between the first conductive strands defines a plurality of apertures substantially parallel to the phosphor elements on the screen. Each of the first conductive strands has a substantially continuous insulating material layer formed on a screen-facing side thereof. A plurality of second conductive wires are oriented substantially perpendicular to the plurality of first conductive strands and are bonded thereto by the insulating material layer. The insulating material layer is partially or slightly conductive to an extent sufficient to prevent an accumulation of a significant electrical charge.

    Abstract: A tension mask frame assembly for a color cathode-ray-tube including a frame having four respective sides, two of the sides paralleling each other and having insert receiving brackets for supporting strand termination inserts therein and vertical mask strands welded to said termination inserts. The strands have a plurality of cross-wires extending perpendicular to the strands and attached thereto by a conductive bonding material. The wires and termination inserts are composed of materials having a first coefficient of thermal expansion. The frame and receiving brackets are composed of materials having a second coefficient of thermal expansion. The termination inserts thermally expand and contract independently of the frame and receiving brackets, whereby movement of the strands in the horizontal dimension is controlled by thermal expansion and contraction of the termination inserts and cross-wires.

    Abstract: A color picture tube has a tensioned mask supported by a support frame mounted within said tube. The mask has a significantly lower coeffiecient of thermal expansion than the frame. Intermediary members are located between the mask and the frame. The intermediary members are of a material similar to that of the mask. Each of the members is attached to the frame at a single location and the mask is attached to edges of the intermediary members. Further included are guides for holding the intermediary members to the frame while permitting expansion of the frame relative to the intermediary members.

    Abstract: A light-absorbing matrix 23, having openings therein, is formed on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 of a cathode-ray tube 10 by providing a photoreceptor thereon, electrostatically charging the photoreceptor 72 to a substantially uniform level of charge, and exposing the photoreceptor to light through openings 33 in a color selection electrode 24 to selectively discharge the more intensely illuminated areas of the photoreceptor, without substantially discharging the less intensely illuminated areas. The photoreceptor 72 comprises a plurality of layers including a photoresist layer 56, a conductive layer 62, and a photoconductive layer 66. The openings 33 in the color selection electrode 24 have a dimension substantially greater than the dimension of the openings in the resultant matrix 23.The photoreceptor 72 is contacted with a liquid toner having charged pigment particles which form toner lines 84 on the less intensely illuminated areas of the photoreceptor.

    Abstract: A cathode ray tube may utilize a focus mask color-selection structure. The focus mask structure is susceptible to localized, transient short circuit events, or breakdown events. These events may be caused by conductive particulates that become free within the cathode ray tube and provide a short circuit between first and second layers of the focus mask. The breakdown events are undesirable because they may result in cross-strand currents causing mask strand magnetization that can interfere with a video image on the screen of the cathode ray tube. A transformer rapidly senses random changes in a voltage or a current supplied to the second layer of the focus mask. A pulse waveform generator is coupled to the transformer and provides a pulse waveform responsive to the sudden change in voltage or current.

A uniaxial tension focus mask 25, having a plurality of spaced-apart first metal strands 40, is located adjacent to an effective picture area of the screen 22. The spacing between the first metal strands 40 defines a plurality of slots 42 substantially parallel to the phosphor lines of the screen. A plurality of second metal strands 60 are oriented substantially perpendicular to the first metal strands 40 and are insulated therefrom across the effective picture area by insulators 62. The second metal strands 60 are attached by a glass conductor layer 68 to respective right and left first metal end strands 140 outside the effective picture area to form busbars.

    Abstract: A method of forming a recording disc having a smooth groove suitable for recording video information from a disc having irregularities along the peaks between adjacent groove convolutions by replicating the grooved disc to produce a negative reproduction of the groove and applying an excess of deformable or removable material such as electron beam sensitive material to the surface of the replicated disc while rotating the disc rapidly only long enough to drive off the excess material and allowing the remaining material to dry, partially filling the groove and providing a continuous coating over the wall and valley portions thereof.
