  • Patent number: 11767189
Abstract: Devices, methods, and systems for splicing a trailing edge of an outgoing roll with a leading edge of a replacement roll with a lapless butt splice on-the-fly during converting and printing production. A first strip of adhesive tape may be placed partially under the leading edge, such that a portion of the adhesive tape remains exposed beyond the leading edge. The replacement roll may be accelerated to match the speed of the outgoing web's movement, a trailing edge of the outgoing web may be cut free from the outgoing roll, and the trailing edge of the outgoing roll may be positioned over the exposed portion of the adhesive tape. A second strip of adhesive tape may be applied over the leading edge and trailing edge using a splicer roller timed to apply the tape when the edges pass proximate to the splicer roller.

  • Publication number: 20090250544
Abstract: Transferring a moving web from a winding roll to a new core is effected by cutting the web to form a downstream web end portion and an adjacent upstream web end portion; splicing the cut web with a tape; moving the spliced web to a position adjacent to the new core; and adhering the downstream web end portion to the new core with the tape.

  • Patent number: 7124979
Abstract: According to one exemplary embodiment, a turret-type winder is provided and includes a rotatable turret assembly having a first core and a second core supported thereby. The turret is rotatable so that the first core can be positioned at a first location while the second core is positioned at a different second location, and the web material can be wound onto either of the first and second core at either of the first and second locations. The winder includes a pack roll assembly associated with each of the first and second cores, with the pack roll assembly including one pack roll that is pivotably movable into contact with a winding roll. The present winder is configured such that each of the first and second cores is unloaded at the first location after the winding is completed thereon and a new core is loaded at the same first location, while the other of the first and second cores is continuously winding at the second location.

  • Patent number: 6701992
Abstract: A butt splicer lengthens a travel distance of a lap-spliced web by a predetermined distance. A pair of knives, spaced apart by the predetermined distance are fired when the lap splice is between them. The severed ends of the web are brought together on a vacuum roll for the application of a tape bridging the upstream and downstream ends. In one embodiment, a second tape is applied to the second side of the web to form a double butt splice.

  • Patent number: 6364244
Abstract: The severed trailing edge of a two-ply web is spliced to a leading edge of a replacement web on a replacement roll in a two-part operation which permits on-the-fly splicing. The upper ply of the replacement web is trimmed back to reveal a strip of the lower ply. A splice tape is placed under the edge of the lower ply with a portion of the splice tape exposed. A splice roll is prepared with a splice sheet having first and second adhesive strips spaced apart on it. The replacement roll and splice roll are accelerated to synchronize their peripheral speeds with the web speed. The rotational phases of the replacement roll and splice roll are coordinated. A bump roll is triggered to urge the web against the replacement roll. A cut-off knife is triggered to sever the web. The bump roll and cut-off knife trigger are timed so that the trailing edge of the severed web falls into contact with the exposed portion of the splice tape. This splices the lower plies together.

  • Patent number: 5791587
Abstract: Apparatus for transferring a web moving in a guided and supported web feeding course traversing around a rotary frame and passing therefrom to and winding as a web stock on a first core at a winding station proximal a rotary frame periphery is provided with a rotary circular cutter on the rotary frame that cuts the moving web crosswise of the web travel. Prior to cutting the web the first core is moved away from the winding station and replaced thereat with an empty takeup core. The rotary frame is then rotationally speeded up so that its periphery at which a frame carried web contact shoe and rotary cutter can be positioned move in tandem with the web. The web contact shoe can then be brought into contact with the web to hold it and the circular cutter is operated to cut the feeding web. A trailing end of a part of the web downstream of the cut continues on to windup on the first core. A leading end of the part of the web upstream remains held by the contact shoe.
