Patent number: 7204932Abstract: An improved method is provided for fabricating a polarisation rotator in a rib waveguide having a propagation axis and opposite side walls. The method includes etching a pit in the substrate surface to form a recess in one of the side walls of the waveguide, during formation of the waveguide on the substrate surface, so as to provide an asymmetric waveguide section for imparting polarisation rotation to radiation propagated along the propagation axis. Preferably the pit is formed by a wet etching step forming an upper side surface within the recess that is inclined relative the waveguide side walls, and the waveguide side walls are formed by a dry etching step to extend perpendicularly to the substrate surface. In addition the dry etching step forms a lower side surface adjoining the upper side surface within the recess and tilted relative to the upper side surface.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2004Date of Patent: April 17, 2007Assignee: Bookham Technology plcInventors: Robert Ian Johnstone, Robert Graham Walker, Robert Anthony Griffin

Patent number: 6870968Abstract: A signal time-scaling arrangement utilises a known configuration comprising the use of a laser which has its wavelength varied over time, a modulator coupled to the laser and to a modulating analogue electrical source and a dispersion means coupled to the output of the modulator and providing at its output a signal which is a stretched version of the analogue modulating signal, but provides for the modulator to be a single-sideband modulator instead of double-sideband. The effect of this is to enable the use of a much simple laser-control system involving a CW laser output which is wavelength-ramped continuously between quite narrow wavelength limits, while allowing the use of a dispersion means having a wide dispersion characteristic in order to provide the required degree of time-scaling. The invention is application to an ADC system or to a Doppler system.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2001Date of Patent: March 22, 2005Assignee: Bookham Technology PLCInventor: Robert Anthony Griffin

Publication number: 20040052448Abstract: An analogue-to-digital conversion arrangement employs a CW laser, which is ramped in wavelength over a given wavelength range for a given time, to drive a modulator whose modulating input is an analogue signal to be converted. The modulator feeds wavelength-splitter having a number of channels centered on different wavelengths within the wavelength range, the outputs of these channels being converted into respective analogue electrical signals, conventional ADCs being finally used to convert these signals in turn into digital signals.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 21, 2003Publication date: March 18, 2004Inventor: Robert Anthony Griffin

Publication number: 20040021829Abstract: The use of multi-level signalling in optical links may provide an improvement in system capacity compared to conventional binary signalling. Unlike conventional electronic or radio systems, in optically amplified links where optical noise is dominant equally spaced signalling levels are not optimum. For these links, the use of signalling levels with quadratic spacing can provide the lowest bit error rate for a given signal power, allowing a 6 dB reduction in launched optical power. The invention described is an arrangement to produce multi-level optical signalling with quadratic spacing. A multi-level optical signal generator for generating a multi-level optical signal in optical links in response to two or mote electrical signals. A light source arrangement provides a respective optical signal for each electrical signal utilising either separate light sources corresponding to each electrical signal or preferably, a single light source and a beam splitter.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 1, 2003Publication date: February 5, 2004Inventor: Robert Anthony Griffin
