  • Patent number: 5594058
Abstract: A novel polyphenylene resin is formed by the polycyclotrimerization of vinylethynylbenzene, diethynylbenzene and phenylacetylene. Polymerization is carried out under conditions which result in the retention of unreacted vinyl groups from the vinylethynylbenzene component, which are then susceptible to crosslinking. The polymer is useful in the formation of high-performance carbon--carbon composites, producing an unusually high char yield with advantageous handling and processing characteristics.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 15, 1988
Date of Patent: January 14, 1997
    Assignee: Aerojet- General Corporation
Inventors: Robert E. Olsen, Harlan F. Reese, Stephen J. Backlund
  • Patent number: 5576375
Abstract: A novel resin is formed by the copolymerization of vinylethynylbenzene and diethynylbenzene. Polymerization is carried out under conditions which result in the retention of both unreacted vinyl groups from the vinylethynylbenzene component and unreacted ethynyl groups from the diethynyl component, both of which are then susceptible to crosslinking. The polymer is useful in the formation of high-performance carbon-carbon composites, producing an unusually high char yield with advantageous handling and processing characteristics.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 15, 1988
Date of Patent: November 19, 1996
    Assignee: Aerojet- General Corporation
Inventors: Robert E. Olsen, Harlan F. Reese, Stephen J. Backlund
  • Patent number: 5030763
Abstract: A method of making ethylenediamine dinitrate comprising:(a) reacting ethylenediamine with aqueous nitric acid to form ethylenediamine dinitrate solution; and(b) adding said ethylenediamine dinitrate solution to a non-aqueous liquid, miscible with water in amounts of at least about 50 percent by weight, and in which ethylenediamine dinitrate is insoluble, to form solid ethylenediamine dinitrate with an average particle size of about 30 microns in diameter.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 13, 1990
Date of Patent: July 9, 1991
    Assignee: Aerojet-General Corporation

  • Patent number: 4686304
Abstract: The invention provides compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is chloride, fluoride, bromide, iodide or alkoxy, and R is alkyl, arylalkyl, or phenyl which compounds are intermediates in the preparation of 3,6-bis(carboethoxyamino)-2,5-diaziridinyl-1,4-benzoquinone.

  • Patent number: 4381399
Abstract: (-)-6a,10a-Trans-1-hydroxy-3-n-pentyl-6,6,9-trimethyl-6a,7,8,10a-tetrahydro dibenzo[b,d]pyran or any of its related pyrans in which the n-pentyl group is replaced by hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl is isolated from a crude synthetic mixture by a process which comprises esterifying the mixture to form perfluorinated alkanoic acid esters, removing low-boiling and non-volatile components, passing the mixture through a first gas chromatographic column with a packing whose liquid phase consists of a slightly polar phenyl-substituted silicone oil and recovering a fraction rich in the desired component, passing the recovered fraction through a second gas chromatographic column with a packing whose liquid phase consists of a non-phenyl-substituted silicone oil and recovering a fraction rich in the desired component, hydrolyzing the fraction recovered from the second stage, and recovering the desired product from the hydrolysis mixture.

  • Patent number: 4337196
Abstract: A method is described of preparing a diaziridinyl diaminobenzoquinone-N, N'-dicarboxylate compound selected from dialkyl, di(arylalkyl), or diphenyl diaminobenzoquinone-N, N'-dicarboxylates, said method comprising:reacting a diaminohydroquinone of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of chlorine, fluorine, bromine, iodine or alkoxy groups with a molar excess of a pyrocarbonate di-substituted with alkyl groups, arylalkyl groups, or phenyl groups to produce a dialkyl, a di(arylalkyl), or a diphenyl diaminohydroquinone-N,N'-dicarboxylate;oxidizing said hydroquinone to the respective benzoquinone;reacting said benzonquinone with an aziridine having no substitution on the nitrogen and having substituents on the carbons selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl; andrecovering the resultant diazirindinyl diaminobenzoquinone-N,N'-dicarboxylate.
