    Abstract: A drum mixer is provided with a rotatable cylinder in which aggregates, reclaimed asphalt pavement and liquid asphalt are mixed to produce an asphaltic composition. The drum cylinder includes a first region, in which virgin aggregate is heated and dried by heat radiation and the stream of hot gases produced by a burner flame flowing in countercurrent flow to the aggregate itself to establish a highly beneficial heat transfer relationship. A second region doubles as combustion and mixing zones. In the mixing zone the reclaimed asphalt pavement and liquid asphalt is added and mixed with the aggregates. The combustion zone is formed along the center of the mixing zone by an elongated combustion assembly disposed along the central axis thereof. The combustion assembly and chamber extend from the discharge end of the drum through the mixing zone to the heating and drying zone to segregate the hot gases from the asphalt, thereby preventing degradation of the final product.

    Abstract: A low-temperature thermal desorption (LTTD) system remediates highly contaminated soils. The system (1) reduces the concentration of vaporized contaminants exhausted from the primary treatment unit (PTU) and (2) precisely controls the concentration of vaporized contaminants exhausted from the PTU so as to permit the safe oxidization of contaminants in a secondary treatment unit without oversizing the secondary treatment unit or the baghouse. The concentration of vaporized contaminants exhausted from the PTU is reduced by drawing the vaporized contaminants into a low-pressure region of the PTU so as to contact the burner flame and by supplying this area of flame contact with a modulated supply of air to oxidize a designated portion of the vaporized contaminants within the PTU.

    Abstract: The flame established in the combustion chamber is short in the direction of material flow and of tornado configuration due in part to swirling in spiral fashion of primary air bearing pulverized coal particles along a conduit together with swirling in spiral fashion of secondary or combustion air along a conduit which is concentrically arranged with respect to the primary air and coal particle conduit so that these two flame components are dispersed in a transversely outward manner due to centrifugal force and for wall jet attraction and by this means the longitudinal length customarily necessary for high temperature pulverized coal burners is substantially shortened and the temperature at which combustion may take place is substantially reduced.
