  • Patent number: 7087028
Abstract: A cervical sampling system for collecting a cervical sample for using a Pap test. The cervical sampling system includes an insertion tube with an insertion position indicator, and an introduction guide member that guides the insertion tube into a vaginal cavity. The vaginal insertion tube includes an insertion depth indicator to allow the user to determine the appropriate depth to insert the tube. A cervical sampler is positioned within the vaginal insertion tube and extends into the vaginal cavity to collect samples. The insertion tube and cervical sampler include signaling members that cooperate to indicate to the user when the cervical sample has been rotated through a complete revolution. After the cervical sample has been collected, an ethanol based fixative is applied onto the collecting member before it is forwarded to a lab for slide preparation.

  • Patent number: 5562103
Abstract: A phlebotomy system including a needle assembly, a retraction assembly, and a cylindrical barrel. The needle assembly includes a needle cannula with first and second ends, a needle sleeve for supporting the needle cannula and having a flared proximal end, and a hub into which the needle sleeve is inserted. The cylindrical barrel is threadedly secured to the hub. The retraction assembly includes a central plate with a central opening through which the needle sleeve extends. When a downward force is applied to the retraction assembly, the retraction assembly to moved to an active position such that a locking port is axially aligned with and thereby engages the needle sleeve. Hence, the locking port engages the flared proximal end of the needle sleeve when the retraction assembly is moved rearward and the needle cannula is retracted into the barrel.

  • Patent number: 5549571
Abstract: A butterfly needle system provides a housing including a hollow central hub and a winged extension projecting from each side of the hub. The central hub has front and rear ends and a clip opening on an outer surface thereof. The needle cannula has a sharpened first end and extends axially through the central hub. A retaining clip is disposed on the outer surface of the central hub and extends at least partially through the clip opening. When the needle cannula is positioned in the normal extended position with the sharpened first end extending through the forward end of the hub, a lower terminal end of the retaining clip is held biased against the needle cannula. When the needle cannula is positioned in a retracted position with the sharpened first end housed within the central hub, the lower terminal end of the retaining clip is disposed in an active position adjacent the inner wall surface of the hub generally opposite to the clip opening.

  • Patent number: 5501670
Abstract: A cartridge based syringe system utilizes a cartridge piston having an interlocking needle receiving cup and retraction cage structure graspable by a conventional plunger hook, and a break-away needle assembly, in order to provide simple and reliable retraction of a needle cannula into a disposable medicant cartridge. Needle retraction is accomplished by simply reversing the movement of the plunger at the end of an injection stroke. A conventional type of dental syringe can be readily converted into a safety syringe providing the aforementioned needle retraction simply by replacing the disposable parts, i.e., the needle assembly and the medicant cartridge.

  • Patent number: 5382235
Abstract: Existing syringes are retrofittable with structure for capturing and enabling retraction of so-called extended needles proximally into the cylinders of the syringes upon complete expulsion of a medicament, without requiring alteration of the existing structure for attaching pistons and piston stems in order to mount the capturer. At complete expulsion of fluid from the cylinder, the typical rubber piston is pierced by a sharp proximal end of the needle. Flexible tabs of the capturer deflect proximally while maintaining engagement with the intruding needle, in order to cooperate with particular structure of the needle so as to maintain the captured state. The modification of the extended needle cannula also may include providing side ports which serve the dual functions of ensuring complete expulsion of the medicament and of cooperating with tabs of the capturer so as to cause canting of the retracted needle.
