  • Patent number: 6173958
Abstract: A seal is provided between relatively moving parts and includes plural layers of woven material such as metal, polymer or ceramic materials. The layers are secured to one another and to a first part of the relatively moving first and second parts and extend freely from that first part into engagement with the second part. The woven material layers accommodate shape variations between the parts. In a further form, bristles are disposed between layers of woven material and secured at one end to one part. The free ends of the bristles and the free marginal portion of the woven material project toward the second part in sealing engagement therewith.

Date of Patent: January 16, 2001
    Assignee: General Electric Co.
Inventors: Osman S. Dinc, James Maynard, Bharat S. Bagepalli, Robert H. Cromer
  • Patent number: 6042119
Abstract: A seal is provided between relatively moving parts 12, 14 and includes plural layers 24 of woven material such as metal, polymer or ceramic materials. The layers are secured to one another and to a first part 22 of the relatively moving first and second parts and extend freely from that first part into engagement with the second part. The woven material layers accommodate shape variations between the parts. In a further form, bristles 38 are disposed between layers of woven material and secured at one end to one part. The free ends of the bristles and the free marginal portion of the woven material project toward the second part in sealing engagement therewith.

  • Patent number: 6010132
Abstract: A hybrid labyrinth-brush seal is provided in a flow path between relatively moving parts such as a shaft and a fixed housing. The labyrinth seal includes a plurality of teeth extending radially from one part toward the other providing a labyrinth seal. The brush seal includes generally radially extending bristles in the form of a bristle pack extending generally radially between the teeth of the labyrinth seal toward the rotating part such that the distal ends thereof engage the rotating part.

  • Patent number: 5749218
Abstract: A wear reduction kit for a combustion system of a gas turbine includes:a) a plurality of U-shaped inserts for use with a gas turbine transition piece having a peripheral end frame at one end thereof, the peripheral end frame having a continuous peripheral slot therein, open in a radially outward direction wherein the plurality of U-shaped inserts are adapted for insertion within the peripheral slot, and further wherein the U-shaped inserts are formed of material having a hardness greater than the end frame;b) at least a pair of guide block elements for use in securing a transition piece of a gas turbine combustor to a transition piece support, wherein each of the guide block elements is secured to the transition piece and adapted for engagement with cooperating guide finger elements secured to the support; and at least a pair of covers for the guide finger elements, and wherein the guide blocks are formed of material having a hardness greater than the finger element covers; andc) cooperating combustor flow sl

  • Patent number: 5361577
Abstract: A cross-fire tube for use in connecting adjacent combustors in industrial gas turbines includes a relatively flexible main spring body portion (12,50, 68, 76) extending between two end portions, each end portion including a connector (22, 26, 54, 72, 90) adapted to engage a collar portion of one of the respective combustors. Each of the connectors includes a plurality of spring loaded fingers adapted to engage at least an inside surface of a respective collar portion. When secured in place between adjacent combustor liner covers, the cross-fire tube is in axial compression. The main spring body may comprise a saw cut spring tube (12), a coil spring (52) covered by a wire reinforced ceramic fabric (66), a corrugated wire mesh fabric (70) heat treated to impart spring characteristics thereto; or a bellows type tube (76).

  • Patent number: 5125796
Abstract: The transition piece seal spring includes a pair of integrally formed spring clips folded at one end to define a support slot, the spring clips being disposed in back-to-back relation one to the other. Each spring clip includes a pair of elongated, arcuately disposed spring segments spaced one from the other defining a slot for receiving the outwardly directed flange of the transition piece edge. A flat leaf spring is received in the support slot and mounts the spring clip to the first-stage turbine outer nozzle support ring such that the spring clips depend radially between the flanges of adjacent edges of the transition pieces. The spring clips enable radial, circumferential and axial vibratory movement of the adjacent transition pieces whereby motion is taken up in high cycle fatigue rather than wear.
