    Abstract: A method is provided for differentiating leukocyte subpopulations, immunophenotyping of lymphocytes and counting white blood cells. The method preserves leukocyte morphology and surface markers without using fixatives. In addition, the method finds utility in determination of hemoglobin concentration without using cyanide. The stable hemoglobin chromogen formed is measured at approximately 540 nm.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for cutting a disk of material from a continuously advancing strip of material, forming the disk into a cup, and inserting the cup into the end of a tube. The apparatus comprises a first rotating member having a plurality of workstations positioned around its periphery, a second rotating member into which tubes without cups are loaded and from which tubes containing cups are unloaded, and a set of stationary cams which control the operation of the workstations. The strip of material passes around a section of the periphery of the first member, advances at the same rate as the circumferential velocity of the first member, and comes into relative stationary contact with a number of the workstations. The rotation of the first member relative to the stationary cams provides motion to a cutting mandrel, a forming mandrel, a cutting and forming die, and an insertion mandrel associated with each workstation to perform the tasks of cutting, forming, and inserting.

    Abstract: A method of lyophilizing mammalian cells to produce preserved human cells, hybridoma cell lines, tissue cells, and control cells for immunoassays and other hematological measurements. Prior to freezing and lyophilizing, the prepared mammalian cell pellet is suspended in a solution of trehalose in an isotonic fluid prepared at a specified optimal concentration and incubated at room temperature for a designated time period. The lyophilized cells when rehydrated, retain their optimal physiological characteristics suitable for use as an analytical control and retain said characteristics after storage at 2.degree.-8.degree. C. for a period in excess of five (5) months.

    Abstract: A device is disclosed which, when used in conjunction with a conventional carburetor metering device of an internal combustion engine, allows formation of a mixture of fuel vapor and air which burns more efficiently and yields less harmful combustion by-products than conventional carburetor systems. Incoming air to the engine is substantially completely saturated with fuel vapors by passing the air through a controlled volume of liquid fuel heated to a predetermined temperature, thereby allowing the air stream to become substantially saturated with fuel vapors. The air-fuel vapor mixture is further leaned downstream by the addition of fresh air, and the leaner, but more uniformly and controllably saturated air-fuel mixture then is introduced into the engine.
