  • Patent number: 6899782
Abstract: A method and apparatus for continuously processing fiber into an elastomeric component uses an expanding die (11, 11a) for orienting fibers in other than the processing direction of the extrusion. In one embodiment, an injection mold (50) is used with the expanding die (11), and in another embodiment, an extruder (30) is used with expanding die (11a). Processing parameters may be alteredto control the direction of orientation of fibers (20) in the elastomer component. Orientation of fibers (20) in an extrudate (17) is dependent on the processing speed viscosity of the elastomer, pressure of extrusion, the length l1 and l2 and height h1 and h2 of gate (12) and expansion cavity (14), respectively, of the expansion die (11, 11a).

  • Patent number: 6821111
Abstract: The present invention is directed towards the hybrid combination of a drop gate injection molding system and a lattice gate. The lattice gate is located prior to the orifice of the drop gate. The lattice gate is comprised of a series of cross-direction flow channels through which the rubber flows, with mixing of the rubbers at the intersections of the flow channels. This hybrid molding system permits shorter cure times, and improved process cycle time for curing rubbers.

  • Patent number: 6796786
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the structure of an inline runner for injection molding which uniformly increases the temperature of the injected compound as the compound flows from the injection port to single or multiple drop gates at the entrance to single or multiple injection mold cavities. The inline runner has two opposing series of parallel channels formed into the runner for the purpose of mixing the compound as it flows through the runner.

  • Patent number: 6402077
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a winding bay and a method of winding to provide for a high quality wind of a viscoelastic material. A viscoelastic material and a supporting liner are wound onto a roll. After unwinding the liner from a liner let-off roll, the liner is guided under high tension. Before guiding the viscoelastic material onto the liner, the tension in the liner is isolated to reduce the tension in the liner. The viscoelastic material is guided onto the liner, and the viscoelastic material and the supporting liner are wound onto a windup roll.

  • Patent number: 6379603
Abstract: The present invention relates to a lattice gate for directing streams of rubber into an injection molding device through a plurality of intersecting channels (78, 80) which thermally mix the streams of rubber within the gate (76) as they pass through the intersections of the flow channels permitting the injection time of the rubber into the mold cavity to be decreased while simultaneously reducing the time for curing the rubber within the mold.

  • Patent number: 6106752
Abstract: A method for molding short fiber/rubber composite articles having enhanced mechanical properties by aligning short reinforcing fibers during an injection molding process. The method comprises injecting a molding mixture through an injection gate arranged in a predetermined relationship to the molding cavity. The injection gate has a relatively small thickness in comparison to the thickness of the molding cavity. The fibers are associated with a first direction, generally parallel to the flow of the molding mixture as the molding mixture moves through the gate. As the molding mixture passes through the gate and into the cavity, the fiber direction is altered as the molding material fills the cavity.
