  • Patent number: 4453779
Abstract: An adjustable variable load brake control valve responsive to the degree of air spring pressure as determined by the load condition of a vehicle for delivering fluid under pressure to the brake cylinder in accordance with the supply fluid pressure as established by a vehicle operator up to a maximum pressure value which is dependent upon the ratio of the effective pressure area upon which the air spring pressure acts on and upon and the effective pressure area upon which the supply fluid pressure acts on and which ratio may be manually changed by increasing or decreasing the effective pressure area subject to the supply fluid pressure.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 18, 1982
Date of Patent: June 12, 1984
    Assignee: American Standard Inc.
    Inventor: Robert J. Bridigum
  • Patent number: 4404987
Abstract: A trip cock device including a pilot valve actuable by a trip lever, when the train on which the trip cock is mounted passes over a trip arm secured to the track, for causing a release valve in the trip cock to be opened and opening brake pipe pressure to atmosphere, at an emergency rate, for effecting an emergency brake application. Axial displacement of the pilot valve, along with a stem thereon, causes a groove in the stem to be engaged by a detent member for securing the trip cock in open disposition until the detent is released manually.

  • Patent number: 4045093
Abstract: This invention relates to a vehicle brake apparatus wherein a service brake application is effected by a spring in response to the reduction of the pressure of fluid in a first chamber on one side of a brake-applying piston, and an emergency brake application is effected by the establishment of a fluid pressure in a second chamber on the other side of this piston whereby this other side of the piston is subject simultaneously to both the fluid pressure force thus established and the force of the above-mentioned spring.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 11, 1976
Date of Patent: August 30, 1977
    Assignee: Westinghouse Air Brake Company
    Inventor: Robert J. Bridigum
  • Patent number: 4037880
Abstract: An emergency brake valve device, especially for rapid transit railway vehicles, in which a vent valve for propogating transmission of an emergency rate reduction of brake pipe pressure is opened by direct engagement thereof by a brake pipe pressure reduction rate sensitive piston subjected unrestrictedly to brake pipe pressure on one side and to control brake pipe pressure communicated to the opposite side via a choke. A magnet valve device connected to brake pipe pressure on the one side of the rate sensitive piston provides for electrically initiating reduction of the brake pipe at an emergency rate and, consequently, an emergency brake application.

Date of Patent: July 26, 1977
    Assignee: Westinghouse Air Brake Company
    Inventor: Robert J. Bridigum
  • Patent number: 4026609
Abstract: A railway vehicle fluid pressure operable emergency vent valve responsive to a reduction of brake pipe pressure at a rate in excess of a certain rate, or at an emergency rate, for unrestrictedly venting the brake pipe to atmosphere and thus propagating an emergency brake application, but also sensitive and operable responsively to a reduction of brake pipe pressure, irrespective of rate or at a normally undetectable rate, to a value insufficient for effective brake control, for initiating an emergency brake application.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 26, 1976
Date of Patent: May 31, 1977
    Assignee: Westinghouse Air Brake Company
    Inventor: Robert J. Bridigum
  • Patent number: 4014580
Abstract: An improved simplified emergency brake valve device including a relay valve portion responsive to brake pipe pressure reduction at an emergency rate for actuating a logic valve portion which, in turn, when actuated, causes operation of a vent valve portion via which the brake pipe is opened to atmosphere for effecting reduction of brake pipe pressure at an emergency rate at the succeeding car in the train, thereby propogating such reduction of brake pipe pressure throughout the train for effecting an emergency brake application thereon.
