  • Publication number: 20140055147
Abstract: A test system may be provided in which devices under test are tested using radio-frequency test stations. A test station may include a test host, a test unit coupled to the test host, and a shielded enclosure. The shielded enclosure may contain a test antenna coupled to the test unit via a radio-frequency cable. A computer-controlled loading arm may be used to place a device under test on a positioner within the test enclosure. The test enclosure may have an enclosure door that is opened and closed using a computer-controlled pneumatic cylinder. When the enclosure door is closed, a portion of the enclosure door may actuate one or more levers on the positioner, which may in turn actuate one or more positioning arms to press the device under test against one or more guide surfaces on the positioner, thereby precisely positioning the device under test within the test enclosure.

  • Patent number: 8599089
Abstract: Electronic devices may be provided with antennas. The antennas may include conductive antenna cavities. Antenna resonating elements may be mounted in the antenna cavities to form cavity antennas. An antenna cavity may be formed from metal structures with curved edges that define a curved cavity opening. A flexible printed circuit substrate may be coated with a layer of metal. Slot antenna structures such as a directly fed antenna slot and a parasitic antenna slot may be formed from openings in the metal layer. The flexible printed circuit substrate may be flexed so that the antenna resonating element forms a non-planar curved shape that mates with the opening of the antenna cavity. A ring of solder may be used to electrically seal the edges of the cavity opening to the metal layer in the antenna resonating element. The curved opening may be aligned with curved housing walls in an electronic device.

  • Patent number: 8531341
Abstract: Portable electronic devices are provided with wireless circuitry that includes antennas and antenna isolation elements. The antennas may include antennas that have multiple arms and that are configured to handle communications in multiple frequency bands. The antennas may also include one or more antennas that are configured to handle communications in a single frequency band. The antennas may be coupled to different radio-frequency transceivers. For example, there may be first, second, and third antennas and first and second transceivers. The first and third antennas may be coupled to the first transceiver and the second antenna may be coupled to the second transceiver. The antenna isolation elements may be interposed between the antennas and may serve to reduce radio-frequency interference between the antennas. There may be a first antenna isolation element between the first and second antennas and a second antenna isolation element between the second and third antennas.

  • Patent number: 8421689
Abstract: Handheld electronic devices are provided that contain wireless communications circuitry. The wireless communications circuitry may include antenna structures. To accommodate manufacturing variations, the antenna structures and handheld electronic devices may be characterized by performing measurements such as antenna performance measurements. Appropriate antenna adjustments may be made during manufacturing of a handheld electronic device based on the characterizing measurements. An antenna may be formed using an inverted-F design in which an antenna flex circuit is mounted to a dielectric antenna support structure. Cavities in the support may be selectively filled with dielectric material and dielectric patches may be added to the antenna flex circuit to adjust the dielectric loading of the antenna. The length of a ground return path in the antenna may be adjusted by appropriate positioning of an electrical connector within the ground return path.

  • Patent number: 8410986
Abstract: A portable electronic device is provided that has a hybrid antenna. The hybrid antenna may include a slot antenna structure and an inverted-F antenna structure. The slot antenna portion of the hybrid antenna may be used to provide antenna coverage in a first communications band and the inverted-F antenna portion of the hybrid antenna may be used to provide antenna coverage in a second communications band. The second communications band need not be harmonically related to the first communications band. The electronic device may be formed from two portions. One portion may contain conductive structures that define the shape of the antenna slot. One or more dielectric-filled gaps in the slot may be bridged using conductive structures on another portion of the electronic device. A conductive trim member may be inserted into an antenna slot to trim the resonant frequency of the slot antenna portion of the hybrid antenna.

  • Patent number: 8395555
Abstract: A handheld electronic device may be provided that contains a conductive housing and other conductive elements. The conductive elements may form an antenna ground plane. One or more antennas for the handheld electronic device may be formed from the ground plane and one or more associated antenna resonating elements. Transceiver circuitry may be connected to the resonating elements by transmission lines such as coaxial cables. Ferrules may be crimped to the coaxial cables. A bracket with extending members may be crimped over the ferrules to ground the coaxial cables to the housing and other conductive elements in the ground plane. The ground plane may contain an antenna slot. A dock connector and flex circuit may overlap the slot in a way that does not affect the resonant frequency of the slot. Electrical components may be isolated from the antenna using isolation elements such as inductors and resistors.
