  • Patent number: 4971399
Abstract: In an electropneumatic brake control system including a brake valve in which a holding position permits brake pipe recharge without effecting a concurrent release of brakes, there is provided an arrangement for preventing a release control valve of a penalty application valve from being actuated to a position in which charging of equalizing reservoir pressure is interrupted when the brake valve handle is in Holding position, as well as Release position during electropneumatic brake control, while preventing such actuation of the penalty release control valve only in Release position in the event the electropneumatic brake control is inoperative.

  • Patent number: 4626039
Abstract: A penalty brake control system for a railway vehicle equipped with a straight air-type brake valve device is arranged so that failure of the vehicle operator to indicate his alertness and/or well-being by maintaining a foot valve pedal depressed results in an automatic penalty brake application. Pressure in a volume reservoir exhausts through a whistle to evoke a warning of an impending penalty brake application any time the foot valve pedal is released. When the volume reservoir pressure drops below a first predetermined value, an interlock pilot valve is operated to connect the volume reservoir pressure to exhaust at the brake valve device. A penalty pilot valve subject to volume reservoir pressure initiates a penalty brake application when the volume reservoir pressure drops below a second predetermined pressure.

  • Patent number: 4586755
Abstract: A brake control system for a railway vehicle having separately operated independent and automatic brake controls for controlling brake pressure via a double check valve and a multi-piston relay valve, wherein an adjustable regulating valve is set to exhaust the independent brake control pressure acting on one piston of the multi-piston relay valve when the relay valve delivery pressure (brake cylinder pressure) exceeds a predetermined value, to thereby limit the maximum brake cylinder pressure attainable from the combined independent and automatic brake controls unless the automatic brake pressure exceeds that predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 4577910
Abstract: A quick release valve for releasing the locomotive automatic brake independently of the train brakes when an AB/D type freight brake control valve is used on the locomotive. A release valve normally establishes a fluid control passage between the control valve and a relay valve that controls the locomotive brake pressure. When a quick release is made, the release valve is actuated to interrupt this fluid control passage and exhaust the relay valve portion of the passage to release the brakes. At the same time, a dissipation valve is effective to exhaust auxiliary reservoir pressure. If the quick release is made of a service application, the exhaust of auxiliary reservoir pressure will cause the control valve to exhaust the control valve portion of the control line and thereby prevent an automatic reapplication of the automatic brake following termination of the quick release function.

  • Patent number: 4367903
Abstract: A snow brake control system in which application of the snow brake pressure during release of a normal brake application is withheld for a duration sufficient to assure movement of the vehicle brake apparatus from a brake application position to a release position, to thereby cause automatic slack adjuster action to take place. In one embodiment, operation of a piloted pneumatic valve is delayed by restricting the exhaust of pressure from a volume reservoir via a choke to thereby momentarily withhold the connection of snow brake control pressure to one inlet of a double check valve that is subject at its opposite inlet to normal brake control pressure. The double check valve is effective to connect the predominant one of the pressures at its opposite inlets to a relay valve to produce brake pressure. In a second embodiment, the double check valve is eliminated and the pilot pneumatic valve controls the connection of either snow brake or normal brake control pressure to the relay valve.

  • Patent number: 4125292
Abstract: A brake control valve device, for railway vehicles, embodies an adjustable service brake cylinder limiting valve that may provide any chosen brake cylinder pressure and also an adjustable emergency brake cylinder limiting valve that may provide any selected higher brake cylinder pressure when the control valve device is conditioned for effecting either a direct release of the brakes or a graduated release of the brakes accordingly as a removable selector valve cover member is secured to a ported face formed on the exterior surface of the control valve device in either a direct release or a graduated release position with respect to this ported face.

  • Patent number: 4013322
Abstract: This invention relates to a railway locomotive brake control apparatus operably either manually by an engineer or automatically in response to a change in a train control signal indication to a more restrictive indication to effect a brake application on the locomotive and a train of cars hauled thereby unless the automatic train control brake application is suppressed by the engineer manually effecting a full service brake application. When the engineer thus manually effects a full service brake application upon the occurrence of the more restrictive signal indication, the fluid under pressure released from the train brake pipe to cause this brake application is used to temporarily suppress the automatic train control brake application so long as fluid under pressure is being released from the train brake pipe to atmosphere via a restriction.

  • Patent number: 3985401
Abstract: Apparatus for varying the time between the initiation and subsequent release of an emergency brake application on a locomotive and train of cars hauled thereby comprises either fluid pressure operated valve means operable, by fluid under pressure supplied for causing knockout of the locomotive power supply, to establish communication between two reservoirs, separably charged from the train brake pipe, whereby substantially all of the fluid under pressure must be released from both reservoirs to atmosphere via a first restricted communication prior to the release of an emergency application thereby increasing the time between initiating the emergency application and the subsequent release, or fluid pressure operated valve means operably responsively to power knockout to establish another restricted communication between a single reservoir and atmosphere whereby substantially all of the fluid under pressure must be released from the single reservoir to atmosphere via the two restricted communications simultaneo
