  • Patent number: 5876506
Abstract: The present invention is a new mesomorphic polycrystallite product and a process for making the same. In the present invention amorphous sugar is transformed to a mesomorphic product having polycrystallites therein by a completely anhydrous process rather than by hydrating and then dehydrating the sugar. The product of the present invention is unique in shape and size, and possesses a high degree of uniformity. The properties of the polycrystallite make it possible to replace some or all of the fat in comestibles such as frostings and fillings and to provide fondants of extraordinarily fine grain.

  • Patent number: 5874110
Abstract: The present invention is a method of entrapping an additive within carbohydrate bodies. The additive is drawn into the internal structure as a fluid during transformation of the bodies from a substantially amorphous state to a crystalline state. The present invention is also a delivery system including a carbohydrate body having an internal free volume space defined by an at least partially crystalline structure at equilibrium conditions, and an additive loaded within the carbohydrate body.

  • Patent number: 5849223
Abstract: The present invention is a method of making discrete particles by subjecting an organic feedstock to liquiflash conditions whereby the feedstock is transformed instantaneously from solid to liquiform to solid. Liquiform is a transient condition wherein the feedstock has substantially unimpeded internal flow. Shear force is imparted to the liquiform feedstock in an amount sufficient to separate tiny masses of feedstock. The tiny masses solidify as discretized particles. The present invention also includes unique products resulting from the process, e.g., a monodispersed microsphere product and coated particles prepared therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5110607
Abstract: The present invention is a chewing gum base composition which includes an elastomer and a resin prepared in the absence of rosin esters and terpene components which includes an elastomer component raised to a compatibilization temperature for addition of a compatibilization component. The composition includes a high melting point wax compatibilization component added under low shear mixing conditions at a temperature sufficient to masticate the elastomer for forming a substantially homogeneous mass with the resin component. The compatibilization component is capable of effectuating dissociation of the elastomer under the conditions of temperature and mixing for forming the substantially homogeneous mass. Finally, a resin component is added also under low shear mixing conditions and mildly elevated temperatures until a substantially homogenous gum base mass is formed.

  • Patent number: 4929447
Abstract: The present invention is method and composition for protecting an active ingredient and providing controlled release therefor, especially in a chewing gum composition, which includes a high molecular weight polyvinyl acetate blended with a hydrophobic plasticizer which forms a film with the high molecular weight polyvinyl acetate in the absence of an added solvent therefor. The active ingredient, such as the artificial sweetener aspartame, is blended into the encapsulating composition as, for example, by melt blend which can then be cooled to a solid and ground into particulate. The encapsulated active ingredient can then be used in a composition for ingestion by a human in the form of, for example, a chewing gum with extended shelf life and highly controlled release of the active ingredient.
