Abstract: The present invention provides a tool capable of being set and released. A novel arrangement of a push sleeve in the spring body eliminates several shear pins while an internal J slot formed directly on the mandrel significantly reduces the size of the lower drag body and thus the length of the tool. An internal pathway between the inner mandrel and the mandrel body selectively provide increase flow through the packer tool to facilitate running in of the tool.

Abstract: In order to prevent premature separation of the slip and slip spring and to simplify production of the slip casing, a self-centering spring engageable with a packer tool slip is modified according to the present invention. A groove located at a lower center of the slip below the pocket of the slip cooperates with the spring to retain the spring against the slip and is centered within the pocket without requiring partitions or further welding of lugs to retain the springs.

Abstract: A gravel packer and service tool combination for use in subterranean wells operates sequentially to lock and seal the packer in the well at a producing formation, release a mechanical connection between the packer and service tool, and open a passage through which gravel packing can be performed. Each operational step can be performed in primary and secondary fluid pressure-responsive modes of operation. The secondary mode of operation can be employed in the event the primary mode of operation fails.

Abstract: A packer for a down hole oil well includes an inner mandrel assembly having an upper outer sleeve assembly that includes the hold down mechanism and upper packer seals with a piston on the underside of the packing seals to be pressure responsive and to deform the seals in response to pressure within the well string. Furthermore, a lower outer sleeve assembly has packing elements that are deformed and a setting mechanism to allow the packer to be set in a position within the well casing. Upper and lower unloading valves allow for fluid the bypass the packers when the packer is retrieved upward through the well casing.
