Patent number: 4693846Abstract: The present invention encompasses a urethane-modified rosin ester which is derived from an isocyanate and a hydroxyl-functional rosin esterification product of a dimerized rosin. The urethane-modified rosin esters, having a high softening point and good compatibility with hydrocarbon solvents, good gelability and good squalene resistance, are particularly suitable as binders for inks such as fast conversion lithographic inks.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1986Date of Patent: September 15, 1987Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Piccirilli, Roger M. Christenson, Frederick A. Falk, Joseph M. Makhlouf

Patent number: 4639492Abstract: The present invention encompasses a phenolic-modified rosin ester which is derived from a rosin esterification product of a dimerized rosin and a phenolic resin. The phenolic-modified rosin esters, having a high softening point and good compatibility with hydrocarbon solvents and good gelability, are particularly suitable as binders for inks such as lithographic inks.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1985Date of Patent: January 27, 1987Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Joseph M. Makhlouf, Frederick A. Falk, Robert M. Piccirilli

Patent number: 4569966Abstract: Polymeric microparticles and dispersions of polymeric microparticles in a liquid hydrocarbon are disclosed. The dispersions are prepared by reacting in dispersed form a preformed NCO-prepolymer containing a segment solvated by the liquid hydrocarbon and a segment insoluble in the liquid hydrocarbon with an active hydrogen-containing compound. Reaction proceeds to form polymeric microparticles which are dispersed in the liquid hydrocarbon. Also disclosed are the use of the polymeric microparticles in coating compositions and articles coated with the coating compositions.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1984Date of Patent: February 11, 1986Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Piccirilli, David T. McKeough, Wen-Hsuan Chang

Patent number: 4419407Abstract: High solids thermosetting elastomeric coating compositions are disclosed. The resinous binder of the coating compositions is based on a hard polyester polyol containing cyclic moieties plasticized with a soft polyurethane polyol and cured with a curing agent capable of reacting with active hydrogens, for example, an aminoplast curing agent. The coating compositions are particularly useful on elastomeric substrates such as high density polyurethane foams, as well as on metal substrates such as steel and aluminum.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1982Date of Patent: December 6, 1983Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Piccirilli, Wen-Hsuan Chang, Samuel Porter, Jr., James B. O'Dwyer, Kyu-Wang Lee

Patent number: 4410667Abstract: Thermosetting elastomeric coating compositions are disclosed. The resinous binder of the coating compositions is based on a hard polyester polyol containing cyclic moieties plasticized with a blend of soft polyurethane polyols, one of which has a high molecular weight and one of which has a low molecular weight, and cured with a curing agent capable of reacting with active hydrogens, for example, an aminoplast curing agent. The coating compositions are resistant to solvent popping and are particularly useful on elastomeric substrates such as high density polyurethane foams, as well as on metal substrates such as steel and aluminum.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1982Date of Patent: October 18, 1983Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Samuel Porter, Jr., Robert M. Patent number: 4205115Abstract: Coating compositions having a high degree of elasticity, as well as toughness, durability and good metallic pigment pattern control are disclosed. This combination of properties makes the coatings particularly desirable for use on elastomeric substrates such as those associated with automobiles. The coating compositions comprise as a resinous component, an ungelled hydroxyl-containing polyester of high weight average molecular weight. The polyesters can be cured with a curative such as an aminoplast to give coatings having outstanding elastomeric properties and good pigment dispersibility, particularly good metallic pigment pattern control, properties not normally associated with polyesters for use in coating applications.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1978Date of Patent: May 27, 1980Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Piccirilli, Wen-Hsuan Chang, David T. McKeough, Samuel Porter, Jr.
