Publication number: 20070217890Abstract: A w-base retainer that may be used in many applications, including numerous applications throughout the automotive industry, includes two-stage double-snap-over w-base features with opposite w-base features for assembling moldings to a sheet metal or substrate panel. The w-base retainer will improve the ease of assembly of parts, provide a proper fit, and provide a functional retention of moldings to structural panels. The w-base retainer may be used on, for example, automotive body side moldings, including, for example, doors, pillars, green house moldings and other moldings.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 20, 2006Publication date: September 20, 2007Inventors: Derek Scroggie, Robert Osterland

Publication number: 20070166127Abstract: A w-base fastener includes multiple legs that compress towards a common member, to which the legs are attached, during the installation through an opening of a structure. These legs then engage the backside of the structure to which the fastener is mounted to hold the fastener in a mounted position within the opening. The fastener also includes a head or similar structure that permits items to be mounted to the fastener. The w-base fastener described herein also includes opposite flex arm features for thermal expansion for assembling moldings to a panel. Embodiments of the invention are used to provide for the ease of assembly, proper fit, and functional retention of moldings to structural panels, while also providing for the thermal expansion of the moldings. Aspects of the invention may be advantageously employed on automotive body side moldings including doors, rockers, wheel flares and other areas.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 18, 2006Publication date: July 19, 2007Inventors: Derek Scroggie, Robert Osterland

Patent number: 7213304Abstract: A resilient clip with a plurality of twisted wings for engaging a first structure. The twisted wings provide the clip with a low ratio of insertion force to pull-out force, rendering the clip relatively easy to install yet difficult to pull out. In one embodiment, the resilient clip includes at least three wing members that cooperate to prevent the resilient clip from rotating relative to the first structure. In another embodiment, the resilient clip includes an engagement portion having a plurality of teeth for engaging a tab formed into a second structure. The teeth of the engagement portion engage the tab, permitting the resilient clip to be coupled to the second structure. When the resilient clip is engaged to the first structure, the teeth of the engagement portion cannot disengage the tab, rendering the resilient clip non-removably coupling the resilient clip to the first and second structures.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2006Date of Patent: May 8, 2007Assignee: Newfrey LLCInventors: Daniel J Lubera, Jacob A Siudym, II, Robert Osterland

Publication number: 20010032377Abstract: A resilient clip for engaging a structure and having a body portion having a pair of flanges, a pair of wing members and a pair of abutting flanges. Each of the wing members has a base portion that is coupled to an associated one of the flanges. A first one of the wing members is twisted about a first axis in a first direction and a second one of the wing members is twisted about a second axis in the first direction. Each of the wing members terminates at a tip portion that is angled downwardly toward the base portion such that a portion of an associated one of the wing members nearest a central axis of the body portion extends above an associated portion of the wing member furthest from the central axis of the body portion. The tip portions are configured to engage a first side of the structure and position a second side of the structure against the abutting flanges.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 29, 2001Publication date: October 25, 2001Inventors: Daniel J. Patent number: 5542158Abstract: A fastener grommet assembly of soft or flexible plastic material which forms a non-porous "bathtub" enclosure that fits into an aperture in the body panel part of the automobile. A depending lug from an interior part of the automobile is provided with a metal retainer member that forms a pliable prong that can be pushed into a snap-fit relationship with the flexible grommet member and thus cause opposing wall portions of the grommet to expand into a seal-tight engagement with the rim of the aperture of the exterior body panel part of the automobile.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1994Date of Patent: August 6, 1996Assignee: Emhart Inc.Inventors: Randall J. Gronau, Robert Osterland
