  • Patent number: 6257351
Abstract: A surgical instrument having a locking mechanism for preventing an output shaft of the surgical instrument from rotating and a further locking mechanism for mounting a battery pack to a distal end of a housing of the surgical instrument. The surgical instrument further includes a clutch mechanism for limiting the torque of a drive shaft of the surgical instrument. The locking mechanism for preventing the output shaft from rotating includes a locking switch which mates with a locking cap disposed on the output shaft. The locking mechanism for mounting the battery pack to the housing includes a groove at the distal end of the housing and a retaining ring which engages the groove when the battery pack is mounted on the housing. The clutch mechanism includes a clutch plate that interfaces with both the output shaft and the drive shaft and prevents failure of the motor shaft.

  • Patent number: 5355042
Abstract: A rotating machine having a rotor comprising a flexible shaft with a plurality of masses distributed along the shaft. Included within these masses are magnetic disks. Magnetic bearings are attached to the housing and coact to support the rotor in only a radial direction or in both radial and axial directions. Bearing sensors are used to measure the shaft position local to each bearing relative to a face of each bearing. Variable magnetic bearing parameters are controlled so as to change values of stiffness and damping of the magnetic bearings in response to the measurements from the bearing sensors. These controls can be direct analog circuitry, or digital components, or a combination of digital and analog components.

  • Patent number: 5347190
Abstract: A magnetic bearing system includes a rotor with a plurality of masses distributed along the shaft including a portion having a circular peripheral surface suspended radially from pole pieces of permanent and electromagnets. A fault tolerant adaptive system responds to detected parameters of the rotor for varying the stiffness and damping the rotor. Position and speed of rotor are sampled at a rapid rate for each of a plurality of control axes and are processed independently during each sampling period. Malfunction of any of the processors causes supervisory controller to reconfigure the processing of the samples.

  • Patent number: 4037102
Abstract: A thin-film superconductor device is disclosed which includes a superconductor film having one or more channels or regions of reduced width. The channel areas define predetermined volumes of superconductive material which is switched from its superconducting state to its normal state by impinging low energy particles. Return to the superconducting state is automatic after a fixed interval depending upon the volume of superconductive material in each channel region. The switching or state changing of the semiconductive region is independent of the energy of the triggering particles and results in output pulses of fixed height and width for a given channel volume. Applications of the disclosed superconductor device in digital memories and particle counting apparatuses are described.
