  • Patent number: 4721876
Abstract: A light-source containment device and lamp employing such device; a metal halide arc discharge lamp having a light-transmissive shield enclosing the arc tube and a wire mesh surrounding the shield. In the event the arc tube bursts causing shattering of the shield, the wire mesh substantially restricts shards of the shield and arc tube from shattering the outer envelope of the lamp thereby providing improved safety characteristics of the lamp. A similar containment device encloses the light-source capsule and protects against lamp-containment failures in tungsten halogen lamps.

  • Patent number: 4376259
Abstract: A high intensity discharge lamp includes, within the outer envelope, a strip of niobium foil serially connected between a power source and one of the electrodes of the arc tube of the lamp. The foil is not a power consuming element but will oxidize and open the circuit, thus extinguishing the lamp, in the event the outer envelope is ruptured.

  • Patent number: 4045645
Abstract: In the process of inserting and fastening a thin molybdenum ribbon into the slot of a slotted tungsten rod, for use in the press seal of a high silica glass lamp envelope, a two step welding process is used. The first weld is made with the two welding electrodes at the internal end of the slot. The second weld is made with the electrodes closer to the end of the rod.
