    Abstract: An orthopedic thumb splint is adapted for stabilizing a carpometacarpal joint of a user. The exemplary thumb splint includes a flexible fabric splint body having a wrist portion and a generally funnel-shaped thumb portion. The thumb portion defines a narrowed opening for receiving a thumb of the user. A thumb-abducting flexible X-strap is secured to the splint body adjacent the narrowed opening of the thumb portion. The X-strap has first and second diverging distal ends having respective inside surfaces. The inside surface of each distal end includes touch fasteners designed to releasably mate with complementary touch fasteners located on an outside surface of the splint body.

Advantageously the invention immobilizes the hand such that the fourth and fifth metacarpophalangeal joints of the hand are positioned at a desired angle of flexion and fourth and fifth interphalangeal joints of the hand are positioned at a desired angle of extension.

A method of stabilizing movement of the patella in the patellofemoral joint during physical activities comprises in one embodiment the steps of positioning a support brace having an opening against the knee, extending a portion of the brace against the knee to apply a first force against portions of the knee in the opening, and extending another portion of the brace against the knee to apply a second force against the knee.

    Abstract: A touch fastener strap of the type which includes an elongate strap member with a buckle on a first end and complementary touch fastener elements carried by the strap member adjacent to an opposing second end. The second end of the strap member may be passed through the buckle, doubled over itself and secured in a desired position by connection of the complementary touch fasteners with each other. The improvement is a retention member carried adjacent the second end of the strap member and being deformable between a relatively thin insertion position wherein the second end of the strap member including the retention means is sufficiently thin to be inserted into and through the buckle in a first direction to form a loop, and a relatively thick retention position wherein the strap member including the retention means is sufficiently thick that it is normally retained in the buckle. The strap is also disclosed with specific reference to a wrist splint.
