Patent number: 10842661Abstract: An orthopedic thumb splint is adapted for stabilizing a carpometacarpal joint of a user. The exemplary thumb splint includes a flexible fabric splint body having a wrist portion and a generally funnel-shaped thumb portion. The thumb portion defines a narrowed opening for receiving a thumb of the user. A thumb-abducting flexible X-strap is secured to the splint body adjacent the narrowed opening of the thumb portion. The X-strap has first and second diverging distal ends having respective inside surfaces. The inside surface of each distal end includes touch fasteners designed to releasably mate with complementary touch fasteners located on an outside surface of the splint body.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2018Date of Patent: November 24, 2020Assignee: Medical Specialties, Inc.Inventors: Eric Lee Gaylord, Robert Scott Gaylord

Publication number: 20090112140Abstract: The invention relates to an ankle stabilizing apparatus for minimizing inversion and eversion of the foot, and more specifically, to a body member having at least one cuff member positioned against a cuff portion of the body member, wherein the cuff member defines at least one opening for receiving at least one stabilizing strap such that the cuff and stabilizing strap dynamically apply a variable force against the body member and ankle. The invention promotes variable compression against the ankle upon application and during wear. The invention also resists distal migration of the apparatus during wear.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 4, 2008Publication date: April 30, 2009Applicant: Medical Specialties, Inc.Inventors: Eric Lee Gaylord, Robert Scott Gaylord

Patent number: 7004919Abstract: An apparatus for stabilizing movement of the patella in the patellofemoral joint comprises in one embodiment a base having an opening, a buttress secured to the base sheet member, a tensioning member secured to the base sheet member, a pair of tensioning arms secured to the buttress, a pair of tensioning arms secured to the tensioning member, a pair of compression members formed from the base, and a stabilizing member secured to an edge of the base. A method of stabilizing movement of the patella in the patellofemoral joint during physical activities comprises in one embodiment the steps of positioning a support brace having an opening against the knee, extending a portion of the brace against the knee to apply a first force against portions of the knee in the opening, and extending another portion of the brace against the knee to apply a second force against the knee.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 2003Date of Patent: February 28, 2006Assignee: Medical Specialties, Inc.Inventors: Eric Lee Gaylord, Robert Scott Gaylord

Publication number: 20030187378Abstract: A medical padding product such as a wrist splint or support, for providing a protective pad to a desired body area to be protected, and including a support base for being applied to a site overlying and surrounding the body area to be protected. A gel pad is adjustably and releasably positioned on the base to overlie the body area to be protected. Pad attaching elements, for example hook or loop material, is carried by the gel pad on one major surface thereof for releasably attaching to a complementary hook or loop material carried on the surface of the base. According to one preferred embodiment of the invention, the cushioning pad is a gel pad.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 2, 2002Publication date: October 2, 2003Inventors: Robert Scott Gaylord, Eric Lee Gaylord

Patent number: 6379321Abstract: A plantar fascitis foot support apparatus, including a support strap for being positioned in a generally U-shaped configuration along the medial and lateral aspects of the ankle and extending under and supporting the plantar fascia region of the foot. An ankle-encircling retention strap is attached by its opposite ends to the support strap at a substantially right angle thereto for retaining the support strap in a supporting position against the plantar fascia region. The support strap includes an inelastic segment and at least one attached elastic segment for providing controlled stretch of the support strap during placement on the foot and during subsequent movement of the foot while the support is in place. Complementary and releasably-adjustable fastener elements are carried by the retention strap and the support strap for permitting lengthwise adjustment of the support strap relative to the plantar fascia region of the foot.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2001Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: Medical Specialties, Inc.Inventors: Robert Scott Gaylord, Donald Earl Griffin

Patent number: 6013045Abstract: A touch fastener strap of the type which includes an elongate strap member with a buckle on a first end and complementary touch fastener elements carried by the strap member adjacent to an opposing second end. The second end of the strap member may be passed through the buckle, doubled over itself and secured in a desired position by connection of the complementary touch fasteners with each other. The improvement is a retention member carried adjacent the second end of the strap member and being deformable between a relatively thin insertion position wherein the second end of the strap member including the retention means is sufficiently thin to be inserted into and through the buckle in a first direction to form a loop, and a relatively thick retention position wherein the strap member including the retention means is sufficiently thick that it is normally retained in the buckle. The strap is also disclosed with specific reference to a wrist splint.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1998Date of Patent: January 11, 2000Assignee: Medical Specialties IncorporatedInventor: Robert Scott Gaylord
