Publication number: 20040202290Abstract: A system and method for remotely controlling one or more monitoring devices in a user's household in the event of emergency so as to more productively monitor the emergency situation on a real-time basis. The monitoring devices may include a number of multimedia instruments such as a telephone with an answering machine, a computer with a built-in digital camera, a video recording device, a cellular phone with an integrated digital camera, etc. An emergency service provider may remotely activate the monitoring devices in the user's vicinity upon receiving an emergency help request from the user, and receive the information sent by the monitoring devices to enable the service personnel to plan appropriate response to the emergency at hand. Such an arrangement allows for better monitoring of the user's vicinity in an emergency situation without the need for prolonged user participation in narrating or describing the emergency situation.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 28, 2004Publication date: October 14, 2004Inventors: Samuel N. Zellner, Mark J. Enzmann, Robert T. Moton

Patent number: 6799049Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for tracking movement of a wireless device. The tracking can be done during a wireless communication session between the wireless device and a called party. The present invention comprises a location system that can generate initial location information pinpointing an initial location of the wireless device. The location system can generate subsequent location information pinpointing subsequent locations of the wireless device. The system further comprises a location server that can determine whether the subsequent location information should be provided to the called party in accordance with a rule. Based on the subsequent location information, the movement of the wireless device can be tracked by the called party. In the preferred embodiment, the wireless device is a wireless telephone and the called party is a public safety answering point.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2000Date of Patent: September 28, 2004Assignee: BellSouth Intellectual Property CorporationInventors: Samuel N. Publication number: 20040097243Abstract: The invention disclosed is a location blocking service for use in a wireless network that tracks the location and identity of network users, such as networks complying with enhanced 911 standards. The service provides a network user with the ability to prevent the location of her wireless handheld device from being disclosed to parties other than the wireless network provider and PSAPs (Public Safety Answering Points). The network user blocks the forwarding of location information by signaling to the wireless handheld device when the location information originates from the wireless handheld device, or by signaling to the network when the location information originates from the wireless handheld device or the network. Primary components of the present invention include at least one user interface and at least one location block processor provisioned in the wireless handheld device and/or the wireless network.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 12, 2003Publication date: May 20, 2004Inventors: Samuel N. Zellner, Mark J. Enzmann, Robert T. Moton

Patent number: 6738808Abstract: An anonymous location wireless network service for use in a wireless network that tracks the location and identity of network users, such as networks complying with enhanced 911 standards. The service provides content providers with the location of network users without revealing their identities. The service includes a wireless network having a proxy server, a network communication link to a plurality of web sites, and a wireless communication link to a plurality of handheld devices. The proxy server blocks identity by reading the location and identity information of network devices, generating dummy identifications, relating the dummy identifications to the identity information, storing the relationships in a memory storage, and forwarding the location information and dummy identifications to the global computer network.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2000Date of Patent: May 18, 2004Assignee: Bell South Intellectual Property CorporationInventors: Samuel N. Publication number: 20040088345Abstract: A method for reporting a user's emergency condition by sending an emergency help request message in a TCP/IP format to an emergency service center (ESC). The help request message may be sent over the Internet to advantageously harness the data transmission resources provided by the Internet. A support service provider may commercially provide such an emergency reporting service to a group of subscribers. The service provider may receive emergency requests from the subscribers and may send those requests over the Internet to the emergency service center. The service provider may also convert any non-TCP/IP message received from the subscriber into a TCP/IP message prior to sending the message to the ESC. A per-usage fee or a flat subscription fee may be charged by the service provider to allow users to report emergency conditions over the Internet. The support service provider thus coordinates the emergency help on behalf of the user.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 16, 2003Publication date: May 6, 2004Inventors: Samuel N. Zellner, Mark J. Enzmann, Robert T. Moton

Patent number: 6687242Abstract: A system whereby subscribers are provided with a universal resource locator (URL), that uniquely identifies, e.g., a web site maintained by the calling party. In a preferred embodiment, when the telephone call-reaches the subscriber's handset, a special character, e.g., an “*” is added to the display, e.g., at the end of the calling party's telephone number to let the subscriber know that additional information is available. The subscriber can then obtain detailed information about the calling party by, e.g., pressing a special “send” button on the handset, using a softkey or entering a special code. This prompts the subscriber's handset to send a communication over the internet to a database. The database maintains a table associating calling parties' numbers with URLs. The URL database then links the subscriber's telephone to a website maintained by the calling party.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1999Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Assignee: BellSouth Intellectual Property CorporationInventors: Mark J. Publication number: 20030093406Abstract: A portable telecommunication test set, such as a telephone line butt set, with a web browser incorporated therein. A standard HTML (Hyper Text Mark-up Language) or WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser may be incorporated within the portable test set, allowing a network technician to access the Internet as well as other remotely-located sources of information to retrieve data and other useful technical information while in the field for communication network or telephone line maintenance, troubleshooting or repair. The test set may contain memory to locally store certain technical information, e.g., telephone line-specific data or circuit information, that may be retrieved and “read” by the built-in browser module when prompted by the network technician. The web browser may display the content of the requested information on a display provided on the test set.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2002Publication date: May 15, 2003Inventors: Samuel N. Publication number: 20020077118Abstract: Location-blocking and identity-blocking services that can be commercially offered by a service promoter, e.g., a cellular service provider or a web advertiser. In the identity-blocking service, the service promoter may disclose the current physical location of a mobile subscriber (i.e., a cellular phone operator) to a third party (e.g., a web advertiser) subscribing to the identity-blocking service. However, the service promoter may not send any identity information for the mobile subscriber to the third party. On the other hand, in the location-blocking service, the service promoter may disclose the mobile subscriber's identity information to the third party, but not the current physical location of the mobile subscriber. Blocking of the mobile subscriber's identity or location information may be desirable for privacy reasons, to comply with a government regulation, or to implement a telecommunication service option selected by the mobile subscriber.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2000Publication date: June 20, 2002Inventors: Samuel N.
