Patent number: 5690705Abstract: Precisely shaped composites and methods for making these composites are disclosed. The method of this invention comprises the steps of:(a) providing a production tool having a plurality of cavities;(b) providing a dispensing means capable of introducing a binder precursor comprising a thermosetting resin into the cavities;(c) providing a means, within a curing zone, for at least partially curing the binder precursor;(d) introducing the binder precursor into at least a portion of at least two of the cavities;(e) continuously moving the production tool through the curing zone to at least partially cure the binder precursor to provide a solidified, handleable binder;(f) removing the binder from said at least one cavity; and(g) converting the binder into precisely shaped composites.Steps (f) and (g) can be conducted simultaneously. The composites are bonded to a backing to form a coated abrasive article.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1996Date of Patent: November 25, 1997Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Gary L. Patent number: 5686142Abstract: Coated polymeric sheet comprising polymer substrate a cross-linked polymer, wherein the coating is characterized by:A. being smooth, having a surface roughness not greater than 0.05 nanometers R.sub.a, except that;B. in the otherwise smooth surface, a multiplicity of depressions having depth ranging from 1 to 90% of the thickness of the coating.Backside coatings (containing carbon black in the cross-linked polymer) for magnetic recording tapes benefit from this invention by improved winding characteristics. The concept described is a replacement for rough random surface texture, formerly used in backside coatings, with a controlled surface texture. The process disclosed can also be used to make alphanumeric symbols on the pigment binder coating.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1996Date of Patent: November 11, 1997Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: David A. Wallack, Donald M. Lewis, John D. Munter, Peter J. Silbernagel, Robert V. Heiti, Yuko Yoshida

Patent number: 5500273Abstract: Abrasive articles comprising precisely shaped particles are disclosed. The particles are bonded together to form a shaped mass, e.g., a wheel; alternatively, the particles can be bonded to a backing to form a coated abrasive article; or the particles can be bonded into a fibrous, nonwoven substrate to form a non-woven abrasive article.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1995Date of Patent: March 19, 1996Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Gary L. Patent number: 5316849Abstract: A reclosable mechanical fastener comprising a fastening component having a surface structure by which two such fastening components can become releasably attached. The novel fastening component is a composite of a tough substrate and a fastening layer that forms said surface structure, which fastening layer is formed from a cured oligomeric resin composition having one or more like or different hard segments, one or more like or different soft segments, and one or more like or different monovalent moieties containing a radiation-sensitive, addition-polymerizable, function group. The novel fastener forms stronger linkages than were possible with similar fasteners of the prior art.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1992Date of Patent: May 31, 1994Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Shih-Lai Lu, James J. Kobe, John D. Moon, Maurice E. Freeman, Forrest J. Rouser, Robert V. Heiti, Thomas E. Boettcher

Patent number: 5304223Abstract: A coated abrasive article comprising a backing bearing on at least one major surface thereof abrasive composites comprising a plurality of abrasive grains dispersed in a binder. The binder serves as a medium for dispersing abrasive grains, and it may also bond the abrasive composites to the backing. The abrasive composites have a predetermined shape, e.g., pyramidal. The dimensions of a given shape can be made substantially uniform. Furthermore, the composites are disposed in a predetermined array. The predetermined array can exhibit some degree of repetitiveness. The repeating pattern of a predetermined array can be in linear form or in the form of a matrix.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1993Date of Patent: April 19, 1994Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Jon R. Pieper, Richard M. Olson, Michael V. Mucci, Gary L. Holmes, Robert V. Heiti
