  • Patent number: 6473706
Abstract: An automated system having removable system components is self-configured, first, determining whether configuration data is available, for example, in a non-volatile memory. If available, the processor reads a system identifier of the configuration data, compares the read and a sensed system identifier, and, if they match, ends the self-configuration. Otherwise, the system senses the removable system components, configuring the system. A sensor is moved to sense the presence or absence each of the removable system components at substantially the expected location of the component. The system operates a movable sensor to calibrate a relative position with respect to the calibration mark.

  • Publication number: 20020072739
Abstract: An electrically activated surgical device includes a probe body, an active element and a structure for selectively electrically insulating and/or physically isolating the active element from the patient's tissue when the device is in use. The probe body defines an outer surface, a proximal end, a distal end and a window defined within the outer surface near or at the distal end. The active element is electrically connected to a power source and is configured to selectively assume a non-deployed configuration and a variable deployed configuration in which the active element at least partially emerges from the window out of the probe body. The insulating structure selectively insulates the active element from the patient's tissue when the device is inserted therein.

  • Patent number: 6345864
Abstract: An adjustable support and retention device for supporting and retaining interchageable furnishing and/or equipment is disclosed. The invention includes a pedestal; a horizontally adjustable support column attached to the pedestal for providing rotatable support to a support and retention assembly; and a support and retention mechanism. The support column assembly is attached to and projects upwards from the pedestal and provides verticle and horizontal adjustment. The pedestal can be comprised of five support members extending outwardly from its center and can include rollers for providing ground mobility to the pedestal. A braking mechanism may be provided for the rollers or pedestal to prevent movement of the pedestal with respect to the ground. Interchangeable furnishing (e.g., car seats and/or high chairs) are adaptable for use with the support and retention mechanism through complimentary hardware.

  • Patent number: 6304770
Abstract: A breast stabilization device for imaging and invasive medical procedures includes a shell configured to surround a superior portion of a breast when the breast rests on a substantially flat surface. The shell includes a first opening configured to allow at least a portion of a nipple-areolar complex of the breast to protrude therethrough. A first and second flange extend from the shell to secure the shell to the flat surface. A third flange may also be included to secure the shell to the patient's chest wall. The shell includes a substantially rigid outer member and a relatively softer inner member that is in contact with the patient's breast when the device is in use. The substantially rigid outer member includes a suction port and the relatively softer inner member includes a through holes in fluid communication with the suction port, to allow a patient's breast to be drawn toward the inner member when fluid is drawn from the suction port.

  • Patent number: 6146377
Abstract: A breast stabilization device includes a substantially rigid outer member and an inner member joined to the outer member. The inner member is configured to conform to the shape of the female breast. An opening is disposed through the outer and inner members, the opening being centered on the nipple/areolar complex of the breast and exposing at least a portion of the areola surrounding the nipple. A rigid rim may surround the periphery of the opening and may rise above the surface of the outer member. The device stabilizes the breast in an uncompressed or slightly expanded state to allow interventional and imaging procedures to be carried out without compressing the breast. The opening allows access to the breast through the areola and the rim allows one or more instruments to be attached thereto.

  • Patent number: 6086543
Abstract: A device to retrieve a specimen from soft tissue includes a cannula having an axial lumen, a sharpened distal tip and at least one tissue urging feature extending along at least a portion of the length of the cannula. As the cannula rotates, the tissue urging feature urges the specimen into the lumen. A vacuum may be used to assist in drawing the specimen into the lumen. The tissue urging feature may be continuous or discontinuous, such as a spiral thread within the lumen of the cannula, spirally wound raised features or a combination of raised and recessed features. The lumen may include a proximal section having a larger diameter than a distal section thereof. A soft tissue biopsy method includes a step of advancing a rotating cannula-stylet combination into a mass of soft tissue, the cannula having a distal center lumen and a proximal center lumen aligned with the distal lumen, the proximal lumen having a larger diameter than the diameter of the distal lumen.
