  • Patent number: 6051913
Abstract: An acoustic isolator is formed as a composite of a preform, preferably selected according to a fiber architecture, and an acoustically-attenuating matrix. Fibers in the preform exhibit a first acoustic impedance, and the matrix exhibits a second, lower, acoustic impedance. The preform includes fibers arranged in spaced relationship thus defining a plurality of openings which in turn provide voids that are filled by the matrix. An electroacoustic transducer includes an acoustic pulse generator having a front application face and a rear face mounted on a base having a support structure. The base includes an acoustic absorber attached to the rear face of the pulse generator and the acoustic isolator located between the acoustic absorber and a support structure preferably provided in the form of a heat sink.
