Abstract: Example apparatus and methods improve deduplication efficiency for a deduplication application or process. A first blocklet repository may have been created according to a first deduplication approach that was optimized for a first set of conditions. Example apparatus and methods create a second blocklet repository from the first blocklet repository by deduplicating the first blocklet repository using a second deduplication approach that is optimized for a second set of conditions. While the first blocklet repository may have been appropriate for the first set of conditions, the second blocklet repository may be appropriate for the second set of conditions. For example, conditions that exist for an immature repository or during ingest may be different than conditions that exist for a mature repository or for applications that use a repository rather than build a repository. The first and second repositories may reside on separate deduplication apparatus.

Abstract: Example apparatus and methods process data that is going to be stored in an object store. The object store may have multiple data destinations (e.g., “buckets”). Different buckets have different data storage policies that control, for example, how many copies of the data will be made, whether the data will be stored onsite or offsite, or other storage parameters. Data may be classified by identifying a value for an attribute (e.g., file type, file source) of the data. A storage policy associated with a bucket may then be selected based on the attribute. Once the storage policy has been selected, then the data may be provided to a bucket associated with the storage policy. The number of buckets, data classifications, or storage policies may be updated by adaptive parameterization that considers the amount or type of data observed and stored in the object store.

At least one of the hosts is not provided with direct access to some of the removable media data storage devices. Instead, logical addresses are provided to the host computers, where the logical addresses can relate to physical addresses associated with the data storage resources. A data storage resource handle or logical proxy may be presented to a host, and a management layer determines whether the host receives access to physical data storage resources, or virtual resources that emulate the physical resources.
