  • Patent number: 4878968
Abstract: A compound having the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is --N.sup.+ H.sub.3 as found in claim 1 and R.sup.2 is either the same as F.sup.1 or hydrogen. "A" is an oxidizing anion, and X is selected to provide a neutral charge balance for the compound. A method of making a compound of the indicated structure from a compound of similar structure by an anion exchange process is also disclosed. Finally, propellant formulations incorporating the novel compounds of the present invention as fuels and oxidizers are disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 12, 1988
Date of Patent: November 7, 1989
    Assignee: Morton Thiokol, Inc.
Inventors: Rodney L. Willer, Glen T. Cunkle, Nathan Klein
  • Patent number: 4614800
Abstract: A new one-step synthesis of cyclic 1,3 dinitramines is disclosed. This syesis utilizes a solution of N.sub.2 O.sub.5 in 100% nitric acid as the nitrolyzing media. The polynitramines thus produced find utility as explosive and propellant ingredients, gas generants and in other ordnance applications.

Date of Patent: September 30, 1986
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy
Inventors: Rodney L. Willer, Ronald L. Atkins
  • Patent number: 4539405
Abstract: The novel explosive compound, 1,4-dinitrofurazano[3,4-b]piperazine, is prred by the reaction of 2,3-dioximinopiperazine with a base, followed by the nitration of the intermediate furazano[3,4-b]piperazine. The nitrated compound has a density, detonation pressure, detonation velocity and Isp similar to RDX while being highly insensitive.

  • Patent number: 4503229
Abstract: A novel explosive compound, 1,4,5,8-tetranitro-1,4,5,8-tetraazadifurazano[3,4-c][3,4-h]decalin is prepared by the reaction of 3,4-diaminofurazan and glyoxal in dilute hydrochloric acid, followed by the nitration of the intermediate 1,4,5,8-tetraazadifurazano[3,4-c][3,4-h]decalin. The nitrated compound has a higher density and detonation pressure and velocity than the known explosives HMX and HNB.

  • Patent number: 4485237
Abstract: The energetic compound 2,4,8,10-tetranitro-2,4,8,10-tetraazaspiro [5.5]undecane(TNSU) is disclosed. A general method of making 1,3-dinitroso-1,3-diazacycloalkanes in a one pot synthesis by the condensation of the diamine and formaldehyde, followed by conversion to the nitroso compound with nitrous acid. The general method also provides for the production of the tetranitroso precusor of TNSU.
